so I can run the current version of dxwnd on a Win XP machine without problems, now I'm not at home but I remember the error message was like "dynamic call shell32.dll", as soon as I get home I immediately send the complete error message.
hi! i just got the one available at old-games.ru and am finding myself unable to run it...or is it even installing? im using windows 10. any advice on this? i select both install minimum and install maximum and it goes through a "ubik install, please wait" progress bar, folowed by a window with the title "cryo interative" that is impossibly small and unable to resize and that remains open, even after a fairly reasonable amount of time, both with or without dxwnd.
i have tried closing it and running the game without any luck, im supposing the installation may not be done complete, but i thought about asking how to go through with it.
but i have the 3 .bin mounted!...and i just noticed i actually deleted the .rar they came in, but i remember there was another file there (a .cue or something like that), though as i deemed them unnecessary, i didnt decompress them...are those necessary? if they are, i will redownload the images.
i am using portable win cd emu for mounting images and have not used dxwnd cda emulation...actually, where is that done? the i/o tab? it has a 'fake cd' checkbox and two fields. and if the answer is yes, how would i go into adding three cds? and the mcihack.txt? but, for what i am understanding, it still should work with the portable win cd emu, no?
ow, i tried mounting them with portable win cd emu and, even though they get mounted, i still get the same suck error, so im not sure if it is the mounting or if it is something else, but i dont like daemon tools as i feel it installs a lot of bloat and services and what-not that made me very happy about the finding of portable win cd emu. is there then any way to use it without resorting to that solution? you mentioned that i could mount them from dxwnd? would you mind trying out portable win cd emu to see if it works on your end? since, like i mentioned, the mounting itself does happen.
ah, yes, that! by the '.bin files', i tried to reference 'the files that are in the .bin' rather than the '.bin files themselves', but when i wrote it, the second definition didn't cross my mind -despite it being the most similar to the original.
i ask that you show me the process on how to get those numbers for the mcihack, since i tried substracting the 'stop' from the 'start' value brought on the console when running the bchunk thinking i was being very clever and that that was it, but i was once again the wrong. also, dont forget to indicate what the 'identity' value is! i would say it would be a good idea to attach the mcihack for cd2 and cd3 here to make absolutely sure, but knowing the 'where-and-how' would be interesting and may prove useful in a future project that could require similar steps. i certainly hope not to be begging to the point of fastidiousness, but i would understand it if im stretching for too long.
regarding the cd emulation, i went to the 'i/o' tab, ticked the 'fake cd' checkbox, selected 'D:' on both menu boxes and wrote 'Downloads\Ubik\cd' and 'Downloads\Ubik\Music' on the two empty text boxes and 'UBIK1_3' on the 'cd label' text box (all unquouted), but i get an 'please, insert ubik cd #1, #2 or #3' upon running still. where am i missing something?
... no, wait, after that, i tried dragging the profile .dxw file into the dxwnd main window and replaced the values marked with '?' on 'path' in 'main' tab and on a textbox in 'i/o' tab with 'D:\CRYO\UBIK' and 'D:\Downloads\Ubik' respectively, i am failing to understand why this one works and the first doesnt, but beyond it, the important fact is that by 'works' i mean 'suck'...i really hope that was read as something funny, rather than disrespectful, but yeah, it still brings me back to the same issue, could i be missing something crucial in all of this?
well, i should warn you that im a very slow gamer - though i could try finding a trainer to speedrun through the content...provided, that is. that im ever able to open the game to begin with.
i placed the 'cd' and 'Music' folders in the same folder that the 'ubik.exe' is and tried running the profile file as-is, changing only the root path of the game. got the missing cd error, tried again, got the suck error.
are we absolutely certain that there arent any errors on my installation? i mean, it copies the files, but im still distressed at that 'cryo software' smallest window that remains forever opened until i force close it. other than that, i havent the slightest clue as to what im doing wrong.
oh wow! there is a whole 'help' folder with html files in the dxwnd folder! it s once again one of those things that are obvious when found, but before it, they just never cross the mind. im sure reading through some of this is going to clarify a lot of concepts i have not grasped properly, hence, ill be sure to dig on it progressively...though, i feel that to be able to do the first run for this particular case, it should suffice with the profile and the instructions you have provided, as im basically not making any considerable changes. yet, im finding it impossible to go past the 'suck' error no matter the approach.
on another note, the first bchunk i used -not the one posted here, but one found on google- returned upon usage the .wav s and an .iso file, which im thinking is basically the mix of the .bin and the .cue, but making use of this one is not able to provide any difference on either installation or execution, therefore, bringing the same errors.
any other ideas? im being more and more seduced by the playstation 1 version prospect, even if more limited than its pc counterpart.
ok, so up until now i had tried countless times to run the updated dxwnd, but for some reason or another, it never worked...until now! i ran it and it opened without even a hint of what used to be wrong or the reason why i was using an older version - but trust me, i was not able to run it in the past.
ok, so it opened, i ran the profile, changed the folder where ubik is located, ran it, and suck.
also, im having an inconvenience, since im using 640x480, the 'ok' button on the 'modify' interface is out of my sight on extended mode, but pressing tab and enter allows me to accept changes...on the old dxwnd. on this newer version (v2_05_99) i tab and circle through all the fields (a thing i couldnt do before, but more a curse than a blessing in my case), and never reach the 'ok' button. i know this may not even be a situation that affects anybody else but population: me, but i thought about sharing it just in case.
EDIT - maybe the error with the newer dxwnd was a windows 7 kind of thing, i only just recently installed windows 10, but dont quote me on it.
EDIT 2 - here is a newer log, in case this may help. it now goes into a somewhat different chain of events. on open it shows the insert cd error, and after clicking ok, it takes a couple of seconds and then shows the suck error, but it seems consistent at doing so...and it s also consistently creating a log file!
EDIT 3 - it ocurred to me that logging the i/o op too could prove useful, hence a new updated log.
I thought that it was no good to spread dxwnd releases in all threads, so I'm uploading here some more or less stable leaked betas, waiting to build a final release.
Let's start with this one. Comments are in the different threads.
About mcihack and all things in general, I'm trying to revise the whole stuff.
The problem is that the Music folder is searched by dxwnd.dll (for mcihack.txt only) and the mciplayer (for the audio tracks) but each could be rooted to a different folder in case of multiple CD volumes, shared hook or changes of the working folder.
In a game like this, honestly it's impossible to follow all the intricacies.
I'm trying to add a flag that could fix the Music folder to a specific, chosen location so that you could be sure of what's going on.
I'll say more after I make my mind and write the coding ...
@gho
Okay, I'll try to revise everything I've done.
1) On o..-ga..s.r. there is a CD image. I mounted the image via DiskMagic in Win7.
2) There is no installer on this CD. I extracted the audio CD and converted it to ogg.
3) I copied the contents of the CD to my hard drive.
Here in Win7 you can run ASSETS\PITFALL.EXE separately.
4) The Music folder with ogg files is located in the Gamepath\ASSETS\
I used the experimental version of DxWnd dxwnd.2.05.72.pithack.rar. I have a mcihack.txt file in the Music folder.
The content of the file is this
Regarding this game, ogg files must be in the Music subfolder. This subfolder is located in the folder that contains the PITFALL.EXE file. ogg files must be named as in the DxWnd help (Tutorials: Virtual CD Audio - Preparing DxWnd cd audio emulator environment).
Music subfolder must also contain mcihack.txt with the content I posted. It is also necessary to enable flags Virtual CD audio + Hack track frames and use the published version of DxWnd dxwnd.2.05.72.pithack.rar. Due to the differences between Win7 and Win10, I recommend waiting until the gho complete its work and announce the exact procedure for W10.
I've recently tried to put superbike 2001 into windowed mode. Thats since version 48 I think. First it runs fine, still game crashed after tried to load mixer.dll as far as i remember, somehow expected that, since i've run to that issue with other dx windowers too. I put the dxwnd into sbk2001 folder, run it, added the executable and check just the first option. When I tried to execute that title thru dxwnd, nothing happened, just after a second I've noticed how cpu was rushing 100%, wasn't able to open task manager with control alt delete, nothing that worked before executing the program used to respond. I was able to opensome folder but with the time it get slower, like something was raping the cpu or the pci bridge was in suffering about because i have IRQ issue and setting my vga to work into pci-to-pci. I wasn't able to even log that error or debug it.
