(This short article will form part of my presentation to the Planet X
conference in Rome on 29th January)

Lords of the Underworld

No one really knows what the Mayans thought would happen when their
long-count calendar comes to the end of its 5,125 year cycle on 21st
December of this year. Even within academia there is a wide
difference of opinion, from earlier Mayanists who considered the date
to be an indication of the End of an Age, with apocalyptic undertones
(1), to more modern commentators who are generally dismissive of it
meaning anything beyond ritualistic significance. The modern Maya
themselves seem unworried, and no doubt welcome the global interest in
their culture that this year will bring.

The date signifies the calendar round of the 13th Baktun (13.0.0.0.0
in Mayan's complex long-count system). Seemingly, only one inscription
from ancient Mayan culture concerning this date, now imminent,
survived the purges of the Conquistadors. This partially defaced
inscription is found on Monument 6 at Tortuguero, Mexico. Here are
two translations of the same inscription:

"It will be completed the 13th b'ak'tun. It is 4 Ajaw 3 K'ank'in and
it will happen a 'seeing'[?]. It is the display of B'olon-Yokte‘ in a
great [investiture].” (2)

“At the next creation, the Bolon Yokte Ku, or Nine Support Gods, will
[return].” (3)

So, it's clear that the ‘Bolon Yokte K’uh’ are scheduled to make an
appearance on 21st December 2012. They are the Nine Lords of the
Underworld and - depending on who you think is closer to the truth
with their interpretation - they will return/descend/be invested as a
deity in a Mayan ceremony on the date of the completion of the 13th
Baktun. Is this good or bad, or just myth? The Nine Gods of the
Underworld (sometimes considered to be a single deity) will apparently
conquer the Thirteen Gods of Heaven. The victorious Nine will then
decide on the fate of the next (Fifth) Age.

Perhaps many years ago one might have reasonably argued that the Bolon
Yokte K’uh referred to a returning planet or planetary system, like
the Dark Star Nibiru achieving perihelion in its long elliptical orbit
around the Sun. Then this conflict might have referred to some kind
of celestial battle within the solar system. But, as we can see in my
next article below, that has not been possible for some years now:
Planet X simply has not made an appearance.

Others wonder whether the Bolon Yokte K’uh are linked with another
'Nine'. Channellers and psychics claim contact with powerful
extraterrestrial entities known as "The Nine" - notably the maverick
researcher Dr Andrija Puharich and his co-workers (4). He equated
'The Nine' with the Nine Principles in ancient Egyptian belief, known
as the Ennead. The ancient Egyptians referred to them as "Nine that
are One" (5), eerily reminiscent of the Mayan 'Bolon Yokte K’uh' whose
plurality/singularity is also ambiguous.

Now compare the rather scant description of the Mayan Nine Gods of the
Underworld with the Sumerian deities, the Anunnaki: “those who from
heaven came to earth”. In Middle Babylonian times the term Anunnakku
(Anuna) also referred to the Gods of the Underworld. Are we talking
about the same extraterrestrial entities, the descriptions of which
vary over three ancient cultures? According to Zecharia Sitchin, the
Anunnaki were flesh-and-blood gods who colonised the Earth in the
ancient past (6). They come from the planet Nibiru, which is
synonymous for many with Planet X, and Sitchin argued that they had a
significant impact on the emerging cultures of South and Meso-America
(7).

Just because their planet (in whatever guise it takes) has not turned
up as some predicted, it does not mean to say that the Anunnaki
themselves might not drop by - thus fulfilling their promise to the
ancient Maya?

Interesting as always Andy!

You know what. The number 13 could have added significance if they
correspond with the zodiac and include the often ignored 13th sign
Ophiuchus. 13 Gods of Heaven = 13 Zodiac signs?

Maybe Barry is on to something and if so the 9 gods of the underworld
could refer to a comet/asteroid cluster that passes by Earth (that
could explain the plurality and singularity of the Mayan name)
Depending on our proximity this swarm of 9 comets/ asteroids could
wreak various degrees of destruction. This too could then explain the
other references of previous cataclysms in the Meso American mythos.
Not to mention that there is a telling of the Deluge story that
includes the sighting of several (7-9) comets/asteroids in the sky
before the Deluge takes place.

Its a good notion, although I don't see the comet threat as that alarming I remain open minded, and I do find myself supportive of that idea.

Beware of Baktun the 13th!

I can't help but compare this to our Friday the 13th.

On a more serious note, it only takes one big comet to cause an
extinction level event. The "celestial battle" idea is not new. It
is just that modern humans tend to disbelieve the possibility.

I recall comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 colliding with Jupiter, making bigger
than earth sized explosions. I still shake my head in disbelief of
the magnitude of those collisions.

The thing with comet impacts on jupiter is that the magnitude is greatly exaggerated by such a large gas portion of its atmosphere, what we saw was like shooting a bullet through thick smoke, the ripple affect would be massive compared to the actual force exerted, creating a somewhat allusion of a large impact, to be fair the comet would of been obliterated by the huge pressure before it even got close to Jupiter's core and hence become part of Jupiter's mass.

Saying that it does only take one big anything, that is very true though.

The questions we all want answered is what is it? And is it out there in the near future.

On second thought ... how many sons did Enki have again? The number
7-9 seems to ring a bell in my memory. If they number 9, then the
Lords/Gods of the underworld coming back for the 13th Baktun to claim
control could easily be Enki's sons.

The Abzu, or Sub Saharan Africa was considered the underworld once and
it was Enki's children's domain.

Nine being one or nine as one, could refer to them being of one
accord/ in agreement or following a single objective when they return.
The 13 Gods of Heaven could then be seen as the Pantheon of Gods (plus
one.) Sitchin noted that the Anunnaki council usually comprised of 12
Earthbound Gods and the 13th would be Anu from the homeworld on rare
occasions. Would something like that be in play with this Mayan
prediction?

Wish I could be there with you in Italy, Andy--

Hopefully, the underworld gods are still in league with Enki. Then again, the ninth planet, if we count planets in to the solar system like the Sumerians did, would be Mercury. Might something happen with the Sun, affecting Mercury as the ninth god/planet? Would this event affect Earth? I guess we'll all find out sooner or later, but I've become a bit cynical since Y2K. Best of Luck on the presentation!

There are nine gods in heliopolitan cosmology

Looking at other old texts:-

There are 7 main deities in Hindus although they believe in over 100 just like sumerians, but the vedas states.

The real God is one, the enlightened ones, speak of Him in several ways, God is divine, the supreme protector and graceful sentient, the Universal soul. They call Him Indra, the Almighty, the universal friend (mitra). Varuna the most acceptable and obliterator of sins, they describe Him as (agnim) the supreme guide of the Universe, (Yaman) the controller of the Universe, and (matarishvanam) the life of all lives.

- Rig Veda 1.64.46

Had to check that!

From what I know there are 4 main gods in sumerian? Although they believed in many gods too, over 100. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Anu is the one true god in sumerian isn't he? And Aum is the one true god in vedic, surprisingly similar I find.

Mayan's I haven't really looked at too much but from what I know there gods where regional and once again amounted to over 100 and again please correct me if I'm wrong.

There is a pattern in all three of the cultures all be it in a different manor. But i see no connection between all three or even any 2.

Could somebody enlighten me?

Kind regards
Wayne

well, the ancient world might be inter-connected in a way that is
dismissed by archaeologists. There is evidence and widespread
conjecture that the Americas were visited in past from ancient
civilisations to the east and the west. Then there's the whole Lost
Civilisation possibility or ancient alien intervention (e.g.
Anunnaki), and global flood myths. So given these exotic
possibilities, looking at various pantheons/mytholgies in a global
sense is not unreasonable.

I wanted to also add some input I've had from a young lad who might
prove to be a future talent as an esoteric researcher. I'm adding it
here because I think his timely description of the Nazgul (No. 1
below) fits well with the theme in this thread of Nine Lords of the
Underworld. For more info on my Lord of the Rings connection, see:
http://www.darkstar1.co.uk/ring.html

"So for a school project I had to find symbolism in a book and do a
speech on it so I decided to take on The Lord of The Rings and I came
across your webpage which helped me a ton to find the symbolism I was
looking for. I already knew that The Lord of The Rings had Rosicrucian
ideals, so your page just hardened my thoughts. I would like to share
with you some other points I came across in my research.

1. The NINE Nazgul represent the number of immortality, being three
sets of three.
2. The Elves going to the west is major idea in Rosicrucian ideals was
that the New western world would bring new knowledge to the human
race.
3. Middle Earth is symbolic of the Egyptian After life; in which the
dead did not die, they just lived in another place and chanced hazards
and problems along the way. If you made it through the end you would
be immortal. A idea that the Rosicrucian’s thought as correct.
4. The Grey Havens is the place that the elves went to when they died
after that they were immortal  much like the Egyptian after life.
5.In Norse Mythology Gimli, is a sanctuary that is always peaceful and
has a roof made of solid gold, much like the Christian idea of heaven.
This place is created after the rapture and re-creation of Earth, for
the remaining Gods and Goddesses to go and live.
6. Water is an important symbol in the book as it is a source of life
and salvation. Twice people are saved by falling into water from
deadly heights (like Gandalf and Aragorn).
The white horses that are supplied by the river, near the Elven City
of Rivendell, save Frodo when he is trying to escape the Black Rider.
7.The Black Riders are cloaked in all black a symbol of evil and power
8. The Witch King’s other name used only once after his death is
Dwimmerlaik, which is an actual word, etymologically meaning phantom.
9. I have found The twilight Saga uses the same imagery of the
Rosicrucian's as does Harry Potter.
10. The white tree represents the end (or death of) death the, last
enemy to be destroyed in Christianity was death.

there are tons more symbols if you count alchemy symbolism (the Ents,
White tree, different stones) and various colors used to describe the
world."

Sincerely,
Jordan M. Rapp
