dear sir,
assalamu alaikum,

i would like to read the masnavi in original farsi. it would be great
if you could provide it on your website. i do not really have a
mastery over farsi but i can read the script and understand it
partially. so it would add to my understanding of the glorious book
that masnavi e ma'anvi is.

Dear Asad,
Wa `alaykuma 's-salaam,

Please go to the Links section of my website:
http://dar-al-masnavi.org/links.html

There you will find links to buying the physical Persian text
(Nicholson's edition based on very early manuscripts) and DVD's of
Soroosh's edition (searchable, based on the earliest manuscript of
Masnavi) of the text. There is only one website that has the Persian
text that I know of (Nicholson's edition was available at one time,
and downloadable, but no longer). It is also on the Links page
(guidinglights.com), but this an inferior edition, with hundreds of
verses that have been added to Masnavi over the centuries. But this
edition may be very suitable for your needs.

Dear Dr. Gamard,

Salaam bar shomaa,

The correct address for the guidinglights is http://www.guidinglights.org. To access Masnavi on this website, from the links at the top of the page, gnostic books  (کتب عرفانی), and then Mathnawi (مثنوی) should be selected.

Another edition of Masnavi, however, can be accessed through the following link:
http://rira.ir/rira/php/?page=view&mod=classicpoems&obj=part&id=209.
By examining the first two verses of Masnavi on this page we realize that it is, most likely, the latest -- and most correct -- edition on which Soroosh and others have worked. Divan-e Kabir (http://rira.ir/rira/php/?page=view&mod=classicpoems&obj=book&id=51) as well as other masterpieces of Persian poetry (http://rira.ir/rira/php/?page=view&mod=classicpoems&obj=home&id=0) can also be found on this website whose data apparently has been taken from a series of CDs published in Iran a few years ago.

I hope this can be of some help.
Behnaz

Dear Behnâz
Salâm-e Khodâ-râ bar shomâ bâshad,

Thanks so much for the link to the Persian text of Masnavi. It must be
Dr. Soroosh's edition (which I do not have), because there is a
difference of variants chosen when compared to Dr. Sobhani's edition
(which I do have), which is also based on the earliest edition of
Masnavi.

I have now added the Masnavi link and the Divan link to the Links page
on my website.

<p><A href="http://rira.ir/rira/php/?
page=view&mod=classicpoems&obj=book&id=51">Online Persian text of the
entire Divan-e Kabir, based on the first seven volumes of Foruzanfar's
edition, based on the oldest manuscripts (Unfortunately, the
Ruba`iyyat are not based on his authentic eighth volume but on the
inferior Isfahan edition of the quatrains added to a one-volume
edition of Foruzanfar's edition).</A></p>

I may write to the man who put these texts on the Internet (http://
behdad.org/) to ask if he can replace the "false Foruzanfar" text of
roba`iyyat withe the authentic text.

With the new Masnavi website, you really don't need to have your own electronic copy. Just go to:
and you have all of it--now with an option, via a new button (a start arrow in a circle), that gives continuous recitation in Persian!

The new website is based on the Yazdi edition, which is based on the earliest manuscript of the Masnavi. Another excellent edition is by Soroush:
http://ganjoor.net/moulavi/masnavi/   By the way, ganjoor.net now has an announcement of masnavi.net at the bottom of every page on their website (not visible, however, for those who have ad blocking).

Caution is advised, because there are unreliable editions of Masnavi that have thousands of "improvements" made and many hundreds of new verses added over the centuries. Here is an example:
The old unreliable editions begin: beshnô az nay chûn hekâyat mîkonad ("Hear from the reed how it tells a tale").. The best modern editions (based on the oldest manuscript) begin with the original wording: beshnô în nay chin shekâyat mîkonad ("Listen to this reed-how it complains--telling a tale of separations").
