On "Die before you die"

Dear Ibrahim Efendi; 

I am working on a project for Peter Cunz Efendi and I have failed to find the origin of "Die before you die" - although mentioned a few times in the MAsnawi, I believe it's not Rumi's. Could you provide clue?

Dear Enrique,

This is a Sufi saying, not a supported Hadīth. The same goes for the Sufi saying, "He who knows himself knows his Lord." There are numerous Sufi sayings that are narrated as having been said by the Prophet.

I once copied this into a notebook but forgot to write down the source (if there was one).

Could you tell me if you recognize this as an authentic Rumi?

In the beginning he attracted me with kindnesses

Then, he melted me with the sadness of sorrow.

Finally, he sealed me with the mark of love.

Then I became him.

And he threw me away from my own being.

This is an authentic Rumi quatrain and is in our 2008 & 2023 translated edition of The Quatrains of Rumi:

In the beginning, he caressed me with a thousand kindnesses.

In the end, he melted me with a thousand sorrows. 

He played me like his love bead,

And when I became entirely him, he thews 'me' away in the game.
