Dear Sirs,

Hi. I hope you are doing well. Thank you for your great work on Dal Al-Masnavi.

I am Behnam. I live in Khoy where the grave of Shams-e Tabrizi is.
In the direction of my studies on Rumi & Shams, I am looking for translations of Maqalat .
Does it have any translated book or versions?
I wonder if you help me.

Warm Regards. Behnam.

-----------------------------------------------

Dear Behnam,

I have found five books that have selections from the Discourses of Shams-e Tabrizi translated into English. The best one is by American university scholar, William Chittick. Two fairly good translations, also directly from Persian, are by Turkish university scholar (originally from Pakistan), Erkan Turkmen; another is by scholar, Farida Maleki. There is a fourth book, which is unreliable but has a lot of good material, translated from Turkish (from a not very good translation of Maqalat by a Turkish scholar) by Refik Algan (a Turk who does not know Persian) and edited by C. Helminski (an American who does not know Persian or Turkish, but did her best to make sense of Algan's translation). These four books consist entirely of selections from Maqalat. A fifth one, by American university scholar, Franklin Lewis, has a small number of selections from his encyclopedic book on Rumi in Lewis' chapter on Shams.

These five books are listed in the concordance on my website, in which I identified passages translated differently in order to shed light on these passages. But, obviously, you need to own at least two of them in order to compare different translations of the same passage. You have to buy these books; their texts are not on the Internet. I only completed adding half of the correlated passages from Maleki's book. As you know, the Maqalat-e Shams can be some times very difficult to understand--even by Iranian specialists--because the contexts are often unknown.

Hi all:
A new edition of Maqalat Shams Tabrizi is published in Iran which is more complete compared to Movahed's edition.

Salām Ehsan,

Thanks for the news. And thank you for putting Movahhed's edition of Shams' Discourses on your website (shamsrumi.com). Are you planning to update that based on the new edition?

Ibrahim

درود به شما ابراهیم عزیز

I have not seen you and heard from you for a long time. I hope you are alright.
Me and my friend have worked on the manuscripts of Maqalat for about twelve thousand hours since the last time I saw you in Konya. This new edition is both published in Iran and overseas (lulu.com).
I have never put Movahed's edition on my website for the copyright issues.

Ps: I have moved to Vancouver for living and hope to see you.
