Connections: Magical girls who accidentally end up taking up the role after discovering what would soon be the source of their power (the Clow Cards and Magical Ruby respectively). They're guided on their journey by someone who takes the form of a common object around others (Kero and the aforementioned Magical Ruby respectively) and specialise in card-based summons for combat. Both are also frequently picked on by someone that would still play a pivotal role in their quests (Touya and Rin respectively).
Connections: Second fiddles to their introductory games' main characters stricken with an inferiority complex since they'd never surpass them (Makoto and John), not helped by a strained relationships with fathers they never looked back on after leaving their homes, who gained new powers through their anguish at the death of the loves of their lives (Junpei awakening his ultimate Persona Trismegistus after Chidori's death, Eric's quest to avenge Lucy leading him to the Alucard Spear which awoke him to his destiny as a vampire hunter). They would eventually put their inferiority complex behind them and kept up the good fight after said main characters gave up their life to hold back an eldritch threat, even aiding a new line of heroes battling their common enemy. They also aided a team of heroes in the fight against an eldritch world threatening horror (Nyx and Time Reaper).
Arguably the most divisive Final Fantasy of the PlayStation era, Final Fantasy VIII is easily the most daring of the three. Following the exploits of mercenary students known as SeeDs from Balamb Garden, angsty teen Squall and his crew find themselves wrapped up in an ancient sorceress's plot to warp the fabric of time and space. Their journey takes them to the brink of life and death, explores the past through clever flashbacks, and makes players question the reality of the events taking place. Featuring incredible cinematic summons known as Guardian Forces and the entertaining trading card game Triple Triad, Final Fantasy VIII was a spectacle to behold with a vast world to explore and vibrant characters to team up with and grow attached to.
