Introduction / HistoryThe Riau Province of Sumatra, Indonesia is bordered on the north by the province of North Sumatra and the Straits of Malacca; on the south by the Jambi Province; on the west by the provinces of North and West Sumatra and on the east by the South China Sea. While most Melayu Riau (Riau Malays) live on the mainland of Sumatra, other Riau peoples live on the 3,214 small islands that comprise the province of Riau Islands. The two most developed islands in that province are Batam and Bintan, approximately 30-45 minutes by boat, south of Singapore. By far the largest and most dominant ethnic group in the Riau Province is the Melayu Riau, nevertheless there are many other ethnic groups that live among them. Each group guards its culture well. Other significant immigrant groups in Riau Province include the Minangkabau, the Javanese and the Chinese. The Melayu Riau language is part of the Malay language cluster. The Melayu Riau has two dialects. One dialect is used in the islands and near the coast, while the other dialect is used on the Sumatran mainland. The Melayu Riau language is used in traditional poetry, local proverbs, magic incantations, legends, romantic stories and other forms to express the feelings of the people.

The Melayu Riau people make a living as fishermen and farmers. For those living on the islands, their way of life depends more on the ocean. Farming is limited because of inefficient farming methods. Most Melayu Riau live in wooden homes built on pilings along the length of the river or along the shoreline. The Melayu Riau also build houseboats, placing a house on a floating raft. Besides functioning as houses, these can also be used as small stores. Historically, the Melayu Riau have adhered to a bilateral lineage system in which lineage is traced through both the mother and the father. There are also those who use a patrilineal (from the father's side) system, which is a result of Islamic teaching. Some others follow a matrilineal (from the mother's side), which is due to Minangkabau influence. The basic family unit consists of the mother, father and unmarried children.

The Melayu Riau have been influenced by Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and European cultures. Islam influences almost every aspect of present-day life for the Melayu Riau and parents emphasize religious education over formal education, particularly in primary school. At the same time, many common practices indicate the strong adherence to traditional spiritual beliefs - for example, potions used to ward off evil spirits. A shaman (called a bomo) is normally asked to drive out evil spirits which are believed to be the cause of sickness.

The Melayu Riau need appropriate farming technology for their land. Communication and ocean transport infrastructure are also pressing needs. Additionally, they need improved access to adequate medical services and midwives. Their standard of living is far below that enjoyed by more recent immigrants to the Riau Province. This is ironic given that this province gives more money to the central government's budget than any other province, except for East Kalimantan. Also, much of their land has been taken over by plantations which are springing up around Riau. Burning of forests and swamps to open new land occurs every year. Because of this, there is a need to work together closely with the Melayu Riau community to increase their understanding of economics, the law and sustainable environmental conservation techniques.

The aim of this research was to find out the type and reason of code switching on WhatsApp group of Putera Batam University. In collecting the data, the research applied observational method non-participatory technique. The data was analyzed by using the theory of Poplack (1980). The researchers applied the text in WhatsApp as the data. It was found 15 texts contain code switching. The data ware classified into three: tag switching, inter-sentential switching and intra-sentential switching. From the 15 text, intra-sentential switching were the most frequent type of code switching because WhatsApp group members often change language from Indonesian to English in only a few sentences that appear at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of sentence. Code switching have ten reason using theory of Grosjean (1981). First, to fill the linguistic needs for lexical items, specify phrases, discourse markers, or sentence fillers. Second, to continue the last language used (trigger). Third, quote someone. Fourth, to determine the recipient. Fifth, to qualify the message: strengthen or emphasize. Sixth, to determine the involvement of the speaker (personal message). Seventh, to mark and emphasize group identity. Eighth, conveys confidentiality, anger, and harassment. Ninth, to exclude someone from conversation. Tenth, change the role of the speaker: Increase status, add authority, and show expertise. For reasons in the WhatsApp group only 3 of 10 kinds of reasons were found: to fill the linguistic needs for lexical items, to continue the last language used (triggered) and to determine speaker involvement.

PT Lion Mentari Airlines, operating as Lion Air, is an Indonesian low-cost airline based in Jakarta. Lion Air is the country's largest privately run airline, the second largest low-cost airline in Southeast Asia (after AirAsia) and the largest airline in Indonesia. With Wings Air, Super Air Jet and Batik Air, Lion Group is the country's largest airline's group. The airline operates domestic as well as international routes, which connects different destinations of Indonesia to Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, India, Japan and Saudi Arabia,[2] as well as charter routes to Mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Macau, with more than 630 flights per day.[3][4]

The airline has repeatedly broken records for largest aircraft orders, such as its $24 billion order for 234 Airbus A320 jets.[2] The airline's 2011 order of 230 Boeing 737 for $21.7 billion was the largest aircraft order received by Boeing at the time, and the agreement signing was witnessed by President of the United States, Barack Obama.[5]

The airline signed an agreement with US-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing for fifty 737 MAX 10 passenger jets worth $6.24 billion in June 2017. The airline is Boeing's second-largest customer (after US-based Southwest Airlines).[6] It had once been criticised for poor operational management in areas such as scheduling and safety, although steps have been taken to improve its safety: on 16 June 2016, the European Union lifted the ban it had placed on Lion Air from flying into European airspace.[7] In June 2018 it attained a positive safety rating following an ICAO audit.[8][9]

The airline was established in October 1999 by Rusdi and Kusnan Kirana and started operations on 30 June 2000, when it began scheduled passenger services from Jakarta to Denpasar and Pontianak using a leased Boeing 737-200. It was the first low-cost airline in Indonesia. The fleet was quickly expanded with the wet-lease of five Yakovlev Yak-42Ds, two McDonnell Douglas MD-82s and two sub-leased Airbus A310-300s. Rapid growth enabled modernisation of the fleet with Boeing 737-300 and Boeing 737-400 aircraft. In 2003, a subsidiary airline was established, Wings Air, operating flights on lower density routes. Further subsidiaries were developed including Malindo Air in Malaysia in 2012, Thai Lion Air in Thailand in 2013 and domestically, Batik Air, a full-service subsidiary, also in 2013.[10]
