This post introduces a new podcast series by many-headed monster blogger Dr Mark Hailwood. You can access the podcasts via the Historical Association website here, and/or read on for some background on how they came about. If you have any comments on the episodes please add them at the bottom of this post.
But that has not been an easy task either. Everyday life is a vast topic, and it is not possible to focus on everything these depositions might tell us. So, for this project, I thought I would concentrate on those aspects of seventeenth-century daily life that might surprise us the most, and challenge what we tend to assume about the period.
We know much about the Jewish community in Wales in the nineteenth century due to a richer and more varied range of records available, and to the work of historians like Harold Pollins, Ursula R. Q. Henriques and Cai Parry-Jones.[1] Little research has focused on the lives and experiences of the individuals who made up the earlier community. However, through my research using the records of the Court of Great Sessions in Wales, I have serendipitously come across additional evidence which helps add more depth and detail to our understanding of the lives and experiences of some Jews in Georgian Wales.
Tradition has it that Jews began to settle in Swansea in the early eighteenth century. The earliest individuals who we definitively know about include David Michael, who became a leader of the local Jewish community. Michael is believed to have arrived in Swansea along with a handful of other Jewish men in 1740s, likely as refugees from Germany
I met Port Charlotte expressions from Bruichladdich on a rainy Brussels morning when I was visiting one of my best buddies, Ludo. I woke up to a breezy but romantic rain. Got me a vintage wine glass, poured some Port Charlotte Islay Barley and enjoyed the great morning. Port Charlotte changed skins in the last years but lost nothing from its identity. On this post, I will be reviewing the new Port Charlotte 10-Year-Old.
As Simon Coughlin, CEO of International Single Malt Whisky at Remy Cointreau states, Bruichladdich gives a huge emphasis on being from Islay. From people working at the distillery to the barley used, you can easily see how important being from Islay is.
Aside from the people and community, let's check the barley. For Port Charlotte 10 Year Old, the goal was to use 100% Islay barley this year. However, due to the pandemic, 48% of Islay barley could be used with the Scottish barley. In 2021, 100% of the barley to be used is planned to be Islay barley.
Then an overlooked concept comes into the game. Currently, 78000 casks are being matured on the island. Why is this so important? Because a good portion of Islay whiskies are actually not matured on the island. After being distilled, whisky is taken to the mainland for its aging process. It is in the same country, but it is not Islay! Since climate conditions are quite different in Islay, the distillery is being very strict about aging on the island.
I wanted to state this under a separate headline. Bruichladdich offers three different styles. Unpeated Laddie, heavily peated Port Charlotte and super heavily peated Octomore. Unlike the numbers we see on Octomore (which is 80+ ppm), Port Charlotte 10 Year Old is at 40 ppm.
Being heavily peated is often a misunderstood concept. Higher ppm values won't necessarily give you a feeling of licking an ashtray. Those values are measured before distillation and during distilling and aging, ppm values tend to decrease. So, 40 ppm is just a number. You have to taste it to understand it.
When the new bottle was first introduced to the market, I had the chance of getting one and enjoyed every moment with it. This year's batch offers a well-balanced profile of malt sweetness, spicy notes and of course the famous peat. Peat is not overwhelming and it doesn't overpower any other flavors. This is a very important thing for me when it comes to peaty whiskies. Does it overpower, does it cover any character, any flavors?
The nose starts with a strong heather note that is followed by sea spray. Caramel fudge, ashy smoke and earth are backed by subtle lemon zest and vanilla. The palate has beautiful malt sweetness with grilled coconut, oyster brine, lemon tart and baking spices. All the flavors are integrated with harmony. The finish is very long with sweet smoke, honey glazed bacon, damp earth and ash.

Some years ago, I interviewed for a job in the first-year seminar and used Monsters University as a lens to frame the first-year ambitions and challenges of new students in a presentation. This piece captures some of those points and the unique narratives of the characters and experiences from the film.
Mike Wazowski, one of the primary characters, becomes enamored by the older monsters at the beginning of the film as they were some of the scariest monsters who were the epitome of excellence in their profession. As one would imagine, being scary is a point of pride among monsters, and Mike wants to achieve that goal.
MU is known for having a premier program in Scaring. So much so that the legendary Dean Hardscrabble makes it a point to announce to the class that those who do not pass the Scaring 101 course will not be admitted into the program. This path is highly reminiscent of some academic programs with prerequisite courses before gaining full acceptance in the program of study. We sometimes know these as gatekeeper courses.
During my undergraduate experience, I recall a series of three courses for broadcast journalism and mass communication majors that were prerequisites for the 300 and 400-level courses. These courses were informally known among students as the trilogy; without successful completion, one could not progress to any communication programs.
Sully eventually becomes close friends with Mike as they end up both pledging the same fraternity, Oozma Kappa. Once they found common ground, they brought out the best in each other as Sully leveraged his capital and natural talent to coach Mike. In return, Mike shows Sully how to study and models empathy that proves helpful in his work and collaboration with others. This comes to light as they all must work together during the Scare Games competition to demonstrate their commitment to the program.

I realized that in trying to rehabilitate the mejenkwaad, in trying to envision this character as not just a demon, but as a tortured individual, to humanize her in a sense, I was actually trying to rehabilitate myself.
And these fears are not unfounded. My partner is from the US territory of American Samoa, but still has ties and family in the country of Samoa that has had their temporary visas banned. For what reason? Because of 3 deportations?
The silence of my dreams is severed by her screaming nightmares. And I am a mewling mess turned monster huddled in the corner wide-eyed, wild haired, unable to touch, unable to care, unable to bear the exhaustion, anxiety clawing away at my chest. Am I even
Were the women who gave birth to nightmares considered monsters? Were they driven mad by these unholy things that came from their bodies? Were they sick with the feeling of horror that perhaps there was something
My three-year-old sleeps next to me. I have lost my fangs and ugly dreams. I watch her chest inhale. Exhale. Know that she is real, she is mine. I try to write forgiveness and healing into our story. Into myself.
In legends lives a woman. Turned monster from loneliness. Turned monster from agony and suns exploding in her chest. She gives birth to a child that is not so much a child but too much a jellyfish. The child is struggling for breath. Struggling in pain. She wants to bring the child peace. Bring her home. Her first home. Inside her body.
Purchasing games is always a tough decision for me. Where I live games cost $100. (Actually $90 for Nintendo first-party games, but to me it may as well be the same.) Missing out on quite a lot of recent releases and new games is the norm for me. The last game I had bought at full price was Street Fighter X Tekken way back on the Xbox 360, and with how ghastly the game was, from then on I definitely began making much more informed decisions on purchasing games at launch or for full price.
When the current pandemic started, Animal Crossing: New Horizons had just been released. Many players, especially mates all over, were posting about turnip stalks, decorating their homes, and showing off their detailed terraformed islands. I had no qualms missing out on the plethora of players, as I had to buy a Nintendo Pro Controller around the same time due to the drifting on my Joy Cons.
