Hey all - am hereby popping the first Google Group cherry with an
exploratory email:

Current stakeholders in DK
Carlos, who would you say the current tar sands NGO stakeholders are
in DK at the moment - which ones took part in your previous tar sands
events? And are there any new ones that could be included this year?

Greenpeace
I'm very happy to chat to GP Nordic about what their plans are for
this year if that would be helpful, don't want to jump the gun but
would imagine they would be very up for supporting any interesting
initiative if they have enough warning - how involved have they been
in the past?

Activity ideas to brainstorm:
Carlos have you had any thoughts on what format you would be
interested in trying out this year? Anders what were your ideas
again?

Canadian embassy:
Was just looking on the map and the Canadian Embassy is in Osterbro
is'nt it (coincidentally very near the GP Nordic office...), so thats
pretty central:

Previous events:
Also came across some pictures from your previous events:

Lets explore,

Kirstie

Hi guys

Well, the stakeholders would be GP, WWF, FoE DK and Verdens Skove. These are the four organizations that  worked together on a letter to the previous energi and climate minister Lykke Friis exactly on tar sands almost a year  ago (attached) I was the one more or less trying to coordinate the text content (though mit dansk er meget dårlig) here you can see that Jon from GP has been on it for some time as well. The Canadian embassy is very close to Strøget, going towards Kongens Nytorv, its not very visible though.

Ideas, hmm, well, I would love to see a GP style action =) but of course that´s me. As a coalition, I don´t think a something like a demonstration would be very efficient, I think what I would do would be to have a very aggressive media strategy, bombarding media with information about the issue to raise awareness about it on the danish public. Maybe something that could work would be something more like a flash mob, or some sort of street theater like activity/action.

Anyways, thanks for setting this up K!

Cheers

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the updates on proceedings.
Well I think one the first things we should explore is what the Danish governments position on this is. I'm pretty sure the the oppose Tar Sands, I just heard the other day that Enhedslisten opposes it.

Then what I chatted to Kirstie about was to build a human pipeline from the US to the Canadian embassy's. Before and after or both we should have speakers, music etc...

But I fully understand to achieve this we will need to build up the interest in Tar Sands in Denmark.

Kirstie I can see that you have invited Jon, that is very good but would help massively if anyone could invite anyone who they think could be big players.

Maybe we should too consider contacting Amnesty as it has massive human rights issues.

And we need good media links, anyone has any? We need to lobby the Danish media to really get Tar Sands on everyone's lips?

Let me know your thoughts,

Anders

HI guys

Ill be very brief! Yes, there was a reply to the letter, it was a very formal "we are doing the best we can and our position will be against tar sands". I don´t have the letter in pdf, I have it in print version. They probably have it in Greenpeace as well.

What I know (in very short )is that the Danish EU presidency is against tar sands oil being imported to the EU together with Finland, Germany, Netherlands among others. The Danish presidency will probably not change its position.

In Denmark, I totally agree that the first step is to bombard the danish public with information, maybe that´s why a GP activity would be interesting as a first step to take  to raise the interest of the danish media on the issue as a strategy to make them take notice of press releases, declarations, etc., that could  follow.

sorry for the rushed e mail!

All the best

Carlos
