Hello Thomas & others,

Hope you had a great weekend. A few updates and decisions to make:

1. Norweigan Tar Sands initiative letter
I circulated information from our friends (a grandparents climate group) in Norway last week asking Statoil to withdraw from Tar Sands - I'd like to add our voice to this letter alongside WWF, Greenpeace and up to 60 other organisations because it would give our group credibility and possibly some welcome media attention - please let me know if you have any issues with this by end of Monday as I will be in touch with them on Tuesday to confirm our involvement.

2. Update on GP Nordic involvement
Kirstie and I had a productive call with colleagues at Greenpeace Denmark last week and recieved some very useful feedback and information (see bottom of team planning sheet for useful tar sands links to read up on). They are interested in what we are doing on the 5th and longer term - they have their own priorities with the large Shell Arctic campaign at the moment so cannot dedicated much time or resources to supporting us, but are happy to share information, promote the event on social media and to the volunteer network and will potentially get more involved nearer the time of the event which is great.

3. Deciding upon our activity
With 5 weeks to go, its time to refine our thinking about what we are doing on 5th May so we can start promoting our event. The first question is whether our campaign and resulting campaign letter targets a specific company or a selection of Danish companies investing in Tar Sands? And the second is whether our flashmob therefore sa specific company or the Canadian embassy, or both. Lets decide on this in our next call so we can move forward.

4. Next call on 4pm DK time Wednesday
Unfortunately we had to postpone last week's call at the last minute due to work commitments, sorry for any inconvenience, but are very keen to hold the next skype call at 4pm CET (3pm UK time) on Wednesday - we suggest the PROPOSED AGENDA which we have placed at the top of the group planning document - please input any feedback to this in comments in advance of the call whether or not you can take part - all feedback welcome. And if you can't take part and have an issue you would like us to cover, just add that as well.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Anders

Hi Kirstie

I am sorry we cannot make the Skype Call today.

Next wednesday, I have a Calender conflict, however, I suggest you keep the date/time at next wednesday, but specifically ask for input to an agenda you send out 1-2 days before.

Would that be a solution?

Also, 350.org has now announced May 5th, as the official "next big global day of action, Climate Impacts Day". Is this a problem, or only a help?

Kind regards
Thomas

Hello one and all!

Anders thank you for the great update. I do want to apologize for how little I have been able to contribute to the Danish group. Time has not been on my side as of late.

Thomas, 350's Climate Impacts Day is a good thing. We are currently talking with 350 about how we can coordinate our two days. Here is the link for CI Day

http://www.climatedots.org/

Kirstie, you inspired a thought in me today. Would it be possible to combine the Ecocide action from your forward with what we are doing on May 5th? It is definitely connected to CI Day and ISTSDay.

1. The letter - sounds like a really great initiative. I would go for it if you would like to put your name down as the Danish group. International Stop the Tar Sands Day itself is not actually a group or an organization and would not be suitable for this I think. It's just a day. But as the Danish tar sands group it would be fine.

I think the focus on Statoil is a great way to go because it demonstrates that direct connection between the tar sands and Nordic countries. That being said, I have no idea how prominent Statoil is in Denmark so I am have just made a fool out of myself here:)

2. Would it be possible to combine the Arctic campaign with the tar sands campaign and raise awareness about both on the same day? They are both pretty crazy things we do to get at oil and we are already collaborating with 350 and another collaboration would not be so bad. Would it? Just a thought. It is entirely the Danish group's call how to proceed with this one.

3. Activity - what people do for ISTSDay is so different it is hard to come up with one suggestion sometimes. Since we have always had this focus of getting people involved who do not usually get involved in activism we have resorted to calling our actions "events" instead of demonstrations or protests. It is means that an ISTSDay activity can be much more than a standard protest. This page on the website is meant to help people figure out what they could do for ISTSDay.

http://stoptarsands.yolasite.com/ists-day.php

My recommendation is the more creativity the better for you, the participants and the people you are reaching out to!

4. Unfortunately, due to the ten hour time difference between Copenhagen and Tasmania I will not be able to get involved. I wish you all happy brainstorming and look forward to reading what you come up with!

Derek

Hi - there are no STATOIL shops anywhere close to the Canadian Embassy. The STATOIL gas stations are placed somewhat outside the central part of Copenhagen. See attachment.

Thanks for this Thomas,
Derek, no need for apologies you' have been a great help. Think is a brilliant day to link in with climatedots, looking forward to hearing updates on this.

I have copied in Emma from 350 London, as she have shown and interest in what we're doing in Copenhagen. Emma is there any 350 presence in Denmark?
Kirstie, what do you think about Derek's ecocide suggestion?

Could not agree more with making the event as creative as possible and we're not labelling it as a demo. But at the moment with the short timespan we have it will depend on how many people we get involved, we're are possible working on a after-party event in the eve too with talks, music, films etc but but don't know yet if it will be possible.

With regards to the letter we would back this on behalf on our group of course.

Linking up with Arctic campaign would be good if possible, Kirstie what do you think?

Please see below response from Emma, her email to the group for some reason is bouncing back?
Kirstie you're more google group savage than me, do you know why this happened? Do you need to approve her on the group or something like that?

Hi all,

Sorry for my delayed response, your email managed to get buried :(.  Great to hear that you are thinking of linking ISTS day with Connect the Dots.  Fab news.  I believe Derek is joining a skype call we have organised on Monday at 13:00 UK time - you'd all be welcome to join if you are free and want to discuss how we can make this link as effective as possible and how all our various proposed actions can link together.  More details for this at the end of my email.

How did your call go on Wednesday?  Fruitful?  Did you decide what kind of action you'd like to do and would be possible?

Regarding Danish 350 groups - I've done some outreach to our previous day of action organisers and haven't had any response.  I was hoping though to connect with Marcus I believe his name is from GP Nordic?  Kirstie mentioned this would be a good idea.  We are too (without much avail so far) trying to link up with groups based in the Arctic to do an action as one of the most vulnerable and impacted regions to climate change.  A colleague of mine is trying to reach out to Sami indigenous communities.  If any of you have any ideas to develop for this, that would be much appreciated!

Thanks everyone - great to see energy around all of this and trying to work together!  Gives me energy!

Emma.

Hi Derek

I have a short question (sorry for my ignorance).

I have found this "quote" in a policy paper "Canadian Lobbying Against the EU FQD: Getting the Facts Straight" (attached) found on this page http://canadians.org/energy/issues/tarsands/eu-fqd.html

The peer-reviewed study by a Stanford University professor Adam Brandt financed by the European Commission lends evidence to the carbon intensity of tar sands. (ref 2). This report found tar sands are 23 percent more greenhouse gas (GHG) intensive than the average for conventional crude currently used in the EU. A recent assessment of 13 scientific studies found tar sands fuels to be 18 to 49 per cent more GHG intensive than conventional oil consumed in the EU (ref 3). The tar sands, an unconventional source of oil, are more GHG intensive because they are a mixture of sand, clay, water and a dense and extremely viscous form of petroleum referred to as bitumen. Large quantities of energy are required to extract the bitumen, leading to substantially more emissions than conventional oils that don’t require as energy intensive extraction processes. On average, the GHG emissions from tar sands extraction and upgrading are 3.2 to 4.5 times as intensive per barrel than conventional crude oil produced in Canada and the U.S. (ref 4)

I wonder why the estimates range from "23 percent more GHG intensive" to "3.2 to 4.5 times more GHG intensive". Why are these estimates so different ?

Kind regards

Hi guy

Sorry for the silence! About 350.org representatives in Denmark, there are two girls I know that were the main organizers, but now one is in NY busy with her PhD and the other is busy with her new baby. Ill try to get in touch with them to see if they can direct me to someone else, because I know of a 350 event that happened just 4 months ago, so they are still active.

When are we meeting again? Wednesday?

Enjoy your Sunday!

Hi Everybody

Here is the mailing-list for - at least some of - those people who were engaged in (one of?) the 350 events in Denmark last year. Some of them are exchange students, so they may not be in Copenhagen this year.

I will be happy to invite them to participate, once we know what role they can play....and when we can meet.

Kind regards
Thomas
