Kaitlyn happens to live in my hometown, which is quite a ways away from Brooklyn. Since this book is small and lightweight, it seemed like a great small gift to bring along on the plane. I thought it would be a fun activity for us to do together while I was visiting, and I was sure Kaitlyn would like playing with the cute animals when we were finished building them.

After giving it a read through, we took a look at the instructions page. I liked how the book included images of each of the completed animals. The images helped get Kaitlyn excited to start making origami!

We punched out the letters we wanted to use, then we flipped back to the instructions page to make sure we knew how to fold each letter. The instructions are detailed, so you know just where and how to fold each line.

Some of the letters were a little trickier to fold than others, but the markings printed on the underside of the paper really helped. It was also nice to be able to refer back to the images of the completed animals when needed.

Our paper folding project was a success! Although Kaitlyn was a little too young to fold all of the animals herself (she is 4 1/2, the recommended age is 6+), she had fun folding the simpler designs and she loved playing with the completed critters.

Cassie Tweten Delaney is our Copy Director. She loves books (including comics), comedy, and sci-fi. She's inspired by art and science. As a former Minnesotan, she longs for an afternoon on a lake, Grain Belt in hand. The New Yorker in her is happy spending that afternoon at the American Museum of Natural History instead.

Alphapets is a series of children's books by Ruth Lerner Perle, Deborah Colvin Borgo, Judy Blankenship and Richard Max Kolding. They are similar to the Sweet Pickles books in that each letter of the alphabet is represented in a separate book with an animal representing each letter. Each story was filled with words and objects that begin with the letter of the alphabet featured in that book. A special word page at the end of each book provided extra practice in identifying letters and words. The series was initially published in the early 1990s.

Each story followed a similar formula in that typically each animal has a distinct personality trait. This trait was used to build the plot and to impart a moral lesson to the reader. For example, in Justin's Just Joking, Justin is always playing jokes on his friends, making them feel sad. At the end of the book, Justin's friends play a joke on him to make him understand how much his jokes hurt.

My name is Sue Clancy and I paint and write to cheer people up, myself included. I live in cool, rainy Washington state, in the Pacific Northwestern United States, where I often cook a comforting Irish Stew. I also like to read books and drink hot coffee.

My main motivation for making art is to stimulate a laugh or at least a smile. So, it suits my sense of fun to, alongside my fine art in a gallery exhibit, include reproductions of my sketchbooks that inspired the fine art.

Thank you so much for looking and even more for understanding my humor!! Yes, Dr Bob was a wise man and I enjoy bringing his mental health topics (such as the bit about human awareness you mentioned) into my art! Thanks again!

I love your art! It is so warm & uplifting. I have a 2 month old grandson in Alaska. Who knows when I will get to meet him. Alphapets going to be the 1st book I read to him on Facetime. Getting a copy for his parents to show him the pictures while I read. It is absolutely to begin reading to him. Thank you so much for such a delightful creation.

To support the phonic work that all children between the ages of 4-7 are doing in school, Ladybird has developed a phonic reading scheme. Part of that scheme, this story is designed to help children have fun learning the relationship between a letter, or a group of letters, and the sound it makes.

My Children's Books will never knowingly sell a bad book. We are completely transparent about the condition of every book in this bookstore. Customers should know exactly what they are getting. Each book is graded by its condition and the price is displayed accordingly.
