Hi Jake,
It would be preferred if you could provide a drawing or sketch of both your
application and the bolt, so we minimize any further confusion.
That said, keep in mind that the Actuator (what you call the "heating
element") has only a thru hole, so you can not thread directly into it. If
I understand your application correctly, that means that you will have to
use a nut on the other side to capture the 2nd strap.
Firing the actuator is not dangerous, at least not if you don't put your
eyeball next to it. For bench tests we often use a small piece of foam,
bubble wrap, or tape to capture the broken bolt. For the real device,
you'll need to have something there to keep the bolt head from flying off.
To give you a sense of the energy released, I would guess that if you did
not have anything in place and the bolt was pointing up, it would likely
reach a height of ~10 feet.
We'll hold off on making the bolts until we get a sketch or drawing from
you.
