Units started to ship to Kickstarter backers in March 2013 and were released to the general public in June 2013. It featured a store for applications and games designed specifically for the Ouya platform, the majority of which were casual games. Out of the box, Ouya supports media apps such as Twitch and the Kodi media center.[7] It runs a modified version of Android Jelly Bean, with rooting being officially encouraged.[7] The console's hardware design allows it to be easily opened up, requiring only a standard screwdriver for easy modding and possible hardware add-ons.[11]

As of January 1, 2014, the limited edition white Ouya went off sale and cannot be found on the official store, nor from any official resellers. On January 31, 2014, a new black version of the Ouya was released with double storage and new controller design.[29]

On May 21, 2019, Razer released a statement which announced that online accounts and services would be discontinued on June 25, 2019. According to Razer, most apps will become unusable on the platform, many relying on the user accounts to work. Razer suggests that users may be able to transfer purchases to other storefront platforms like Google Play, if developers and publishers agree to such.[15]

Founded by game industry veteran Julie Uhrman, the project was originally supported by an online Kickstarter campaign. It ran on a version of the Android operating system, and all of its software was expected to be free-to-play. Being an Android platform, it is compatible with Google Play software. Square Enix had given the console their official support, with Final Fantasy III becoming a launch title. However, poor sales, low-quality games, and questionable hardware design forced the developer out of business. Its brand and software assets have since been acquired by Razer, a computer gaming hardware manufacturer founded in 2005.

The $99 hackable console, designed by Yves Behar, was met with skepticism over whether it would be delivered with playable games by its ambitious launch date of March 2013. Over the course of its Kickstarter campaign it tried to dispell this skepticism by bringing on board Muffi Ghadiali, who worked on the Kindle line of Amazon products, and announcing that games developers like Square Enix and Namco Bandai were on board to release games for the console's launch. Former Infinity Ward lead Robert Bowling's new studio, Robotoki, also announced that his studio's first game, an episodic prequel to the studio's 2015 planned released of Human Element, would be launched on Ouya.

With any luck over the next six months, the Ouya's software library will grow to a much more compelling state, bugs will get fixed, the interface will have much-needed features added, and native nongaming content will be released. Harder to address will be the cheap controller and underpowered system architecture, however.

The Matte Black OUYA was released in Febuary 2014, following the White Christmas 16GB OUYA. As of late April 2014, this limited edition is no longer available on the OUYA.tv shop, nor any official OUYA resellers.

By July of 2012, the Xbox 360 had been on shelves for almost seven years and its successor still hadn't been announced. The PS3 was six years old and similarly feeling a bit stale. The feeling that the console industry was stuck in a rut wasn't about to be challenged by a holiday lineup spearheaded by largely unremarkable entries in long-in-the-tooth franchises like Gears of War Judgment, Halo 4, and God of War Ascension. The Vita had flopped at launch early in the year, and between a lack of killer apps and/or horsepower, the soon-to-be-released Wii U was struggling to build excitement as well.

In 2008, the state of New York adopted a law that required all game consoles sold at retail to include content- or ratings-based parental controls. While the ESA released a statement calling the law an unnecessary and unconstitutional government intrusion, the trade group did not ultimately contest the matter in court.

Today was a great day. I released Elliot Quest to the OUYA. Since the start of the development it was a priority for me since i love my OUYA and dreamed of playing my own game sitting on my couch with a gamepad in my hands.

Any advantages or disadvantages will play out as the new Xbox and PlayStation consoles are released. In addition, Ouya and Nvidia will need to attract notable game titles and large catalogs to become viable gaming devices.

On the 4th of July, 2013 we released Small Bang Theory on OUYA and with it, we kicked off our independence as a game development studio. The experience of self-publishing has provided us with sales figures and valuable lessons. In this article we share our sales figures and demonstrate how these lessons are put into practise. We have recently released Small Bang Theory for Android and iOS which provides us with an ideal situation to demonstrate the changes we have made compared to our OYA release. What has the OUYA experience taught us, how did we apply these lessons in our recent release, and what can you learn from our mistakes? This article will provide answers to all these questions.

In this article we have provided personal insight into the game Small Bang Theory we released on OUYA. Unfortunately, our OUYA sales figures are rather disappointing. Despite the setback, we used it as a learning experience on how to do better in releasing the same title on a different platform. We investigated how we could improve our marketing as we believe it attributes to our disappointing OUYA sales. Emmy Jonassen, from Indie Game Girl, provided us with invaluable information on how we could improve our marketing with a non-existent budget. The article goes on to explain the method we applied to our latest marketing effort for Small Bang Theory for Android and iOS, and provides examples for each of the items required for our improved marketing method. Finally, we think that the new method we used, as well as the imminent results, can help fellow developers better understand how to create and maintain a sustainable independent game development studio.

Unfortunately, the specs underpinning the OUYA meant that we were never going to see groundbreaking titles make their way to the little console. At the end of the day, what we typically saw was developers porting their already-released mobile games to the console due to the relatively light developmental effort involved. For games that were designed to be played on the go, why would gamers want to sacrifice the benefit of mobility? The living room space remains dominated by home console games.

After the increased exposure at PAX and GDC, Thorson entered into a exclusivity agreement with Ouya to release the game on the fledgling console. He felt that the Ouya was a good home for TowerFall because of the console's emphasis on the local multiplayer experience and it allowed him to continue development without the added pressure of releasing on a major console. TowerFall was first released on June 25, 2013 as an Ouya exclusive. It saw moderate success despite the console's relatively low install base.

After the Ouya release, Thorson took time developing the game into a fuller package, stating plans to expand the single-player component. He later signed an exclusivity agreement to release the expanded TowerFall Ascension on PlayStation 4 and Steam after the Ouya exclusivity ended. The game was ported to XNA with assistance from Sickhead Games. The game was released on March 11, 2014 and featured a new co-op Quest mode, new unlockable archers and stages, and a multitude of new powerups and variants. Linux and OS X ports followed on May 29, 2014. Since its release, the game has received several minor updates improving performance and tweaking mechanics along with minor additions.

In late 2014, Thorson began teasing the development of a new TowerFall expansion via the Tumblr Devlog. The expansion would come to be known as TowerFall Dark World and was released on PC (Windows, Linux and OS X) and PlayStation 4 as paid downloadable content on May 12, 2015. It included the new ninth playable Red Archer, new alternates for all the archers, new stages, and the new Dark World mode which allowed for 4 player co-operative play. The four new stages featured in the Dark World mode introduced new mechanics and powerups and four entirely new boss battles. The new stages are also playable in Versus mode, with the Cataclysm stage featuring procedurally generated levels. Several minor improvements and additions were also made, such as a refined tournament rule set, several new Versus Variants and mechanical improvements.
