Firstof all, Rufus didn't damage your USB drive. It only removed the letter Windows assigned it, which it needs to do to be able to repartition and format it, and since you cancelled that operation, the drive letter was not assigned back. This is why you couldn't see it in Explorer, but you could still see it in Device Manager/Disk Manager.
The simple option, to make your drive listed again so that you could format it and get a letter reassigned, was to follow this entry from the Rufus FAQ. A couple of clicks in Rufus was all that was needed.
Also, the latest versions of Rufus has improved the default enumeration process and will automatically list raw or unpartitioned drives, so you should no longer have to do anything even if you cancel in the middle of a bad blocks check or a format operation.
But by Rufus it can be seen as "NO_LABEL (Disk 2) [16GB]".I just selected "boot section" dropdown menu to "not bootable", clicked "start" in Rufus. And voila my USB stick is now again recognized in windows :)
Another possibility is the device used to connect the USB drive to the PC doesn't fully support the drive - it can use it, but not format it properly. You may not be aware of this without checking the device's specs. In this case the USB drive can be reformatted using a device that does fully support it, and then Rufus will work through that device.
Specific example: I tried to use a 256Gb SD card in a GoPro Connect2 camera, which only fully supports 64Gb cards. Rufus (v3.14 in Windows 10) couldn't complete writing an image to it, and when I tried again with option "Check device for bad blocks" it seemed to get stuck in a loop (I left it on 64%, next morning it was back on 23%); when I cancelled the check the card was left unusable, similar to what OP saw - and was invisible even in Disk Manager on Windows 10. I used a newer camera to reformat it and then tried Rufus again and it worked fine.
When installing windows 10 in a Uefi supported Motherboard using Rufus.I configured it to have a GPT partition & a Fat 32 boot file system. The boot file system depends on the size of either the install.esd or install.wim file. The install.wim file size is larger.
For MBR partitioned disk.NTFS boot file system is selected
Fat 32 maximum file size limit is 4GB while NTFS support more than 4GB.
If install.wim is more than 4GB.Rufus require user to select NTFS boot file system.
Question >
1.When using Rufus to create a Linux Mint bootable Usb to install Linux mint on an MBR partitioned disk(Legacy Bios motherboard).,can I select NTFS as boot file system?
2.Does Linux Mint OS has a install.wim file where one can check the size?
3.Do I need to enable Persistence & does persistence affect which boot file system to use?
According to Rufus Manual, for UEFI motherboard, select GPT partition & Fat32 boot file system.Only change to NTFS if install .wim is above 4GB.
& for Legacy Bios motherboard .select MBR partition & NTFS file system
I am just wondering if that guideline is also correct & valid when installing Linux Mint on a MBR partitioned disk, that is setting the file system to NTFS in Rufus.
And you replied, just leave it at default Fat32,correct?
I am trying to get Windows on external drive with Rufus i went on my external Windows with a flash drive with Windows 10 iso and Windows support. The only drive that showed on Rufus was the flash drive i had another drive Ex fat Guid. I closed Windows and took the drive that i wanted to put Windows on and the USB Flash drive out of the computer.Booted back to Mac then booted back to Windows and it said there was an errer it would not start i have a second drive with Windows on it and said the same thing?
I am using the drives in a CalDigit Thunderbolt3 dock.It seems a bit odd for both the drives to have the same problem.the reason i am trying to get it on an external drive is two problems
1.it says no host Driver for Bluetooth the only thing that is not working as it should is the Trackpad. The main thing is no sound from the internal speakers but it shows the green sound-bar is working in them.I don,t understand why
I have plugged the Windows drive direst into the computer well one of them not the thunderbolt one. iI booted into Windows tried Rufus again and still said there was only the USB Flash drive in the devices all though i see that the drive i want to put Windows is showing on the drives in Windows and the light is showing it is working on CalDigit Thunderbolt3 dock.I see that he mentions in the video that not all drives work for it in Rufus .I am not sure what he means ,does it mean like mine that it does not show as a device in Rufus?Or that he goes through the process and does not work at all?Would it work with a thunderbolt drive?
. I don,t have a T2 chip computer.I worked it out with Rufus i managed to bring up the drive by pressing ALT and F, Rufus app was different to mine but that isn.t surprising as the video is four years old.It took 90 minutes to do i checked for errors ,it did not find any so far so good. But when i finally got it on there the same things were wrong with it.High def speakers and headphone audio showing they were working with the green bar.
So I now realise Is there anyway I can sort out the Bluetooth problem?it is the only thing with a yellow sign on it.On the sound the only device that shows is the Thunderbolt Dock. And what about the mic?Ihave not tried the camera.I will try the drive on my Mac mini and see if there are any problems there. I know you can't use it on different modals but I will see what the basics are.
The mouse and keyboard are workings see that you can get drivers for the track pad but only arable for the Mac Book. 2017 5k .3.5 How do I go about house missing drivers? So it is all down to the audio drivers to get the Mic to work. Can you give me a link for those drivers?I tried it on the Mini but said no bootable drive.Itried it from it from the iMac I pressed it but nothing happened.I have also put Windows on a T5 but all the same problems. The drivers you are talking about should be in the Windows sport folder they are the two I mentioned the Apple Audio. and the Apple one with the number on it.
I am trying to help my old friend get the sound to work on his i-Mac. He installed Windows 10 on his i-Mac using bootcamp as instructed by Apple. The sound is fine when in Apple mode, but when booted up in Windows 10, all seems to be fine except that there is no sound from the internal speakers. The i-Mac uses a cirrus sound chip, we can't find a Windows driver for it anywhere on line. Windows says that the sound is working correctly, but still no sound! We have tried all the usual checks, but still no sound. We are running out of ideas of what to do next or where to turn for help. Can you help us?The guy did not find an answer.
2017 5k 3.5.I looked at a old post on here and the person had the same problem as me no sound on the internal speakers. You told him to get an earlier Win 10 Iso i got one from Pirate bay needless to say i had the same problems as before. But the windows looks better than the latest one.I was wondering if i upgraded to Catalina would i still get the same drivers as on Mojave ?Windows Support Software?i suppose they would be the same.It is just an idea.
Hi
Not an error. asking permission to go online, what a well-behaved rufus. it is normal.
press Yes for success. after the rufus application is upgraded to current.
another thing that is normal is for rufus to offer to upgrade to the latest version when it is run; first it advises of updates available. So i am guessing that you are on a pc from eight years ago that is not online?
get the recent rufus verson to succeeed with the recent antiX iso.
The specific reason I needed a new OS was because my old unsupported Leeenux OS would not install PuTTY ver 0.74 to replace ver 0.67. I even tried to build from source.
I now have PuTTY ver 0.74 installed and running under antiX. All good.
Hi
I have succeeded, but not with Rufus and the antiX website instructions.
I suggest someone else tries the same procedure. Download antiX and try using Rufus to create a USB stick bootable disk. If what I see is not unique, then remove the references to Rufus from the website, until a fix is done.
Another method I find very useful. EtchDroid USB writer
Requires a reasonably powerful Android Phone.
But not Samsung with OneUI 3.0+, recent Huawei and OnePlus devices
which tend to hang.
Download from FDroid, is very useful to create a bootable linux USB Stick.
Got me out of trouble a couple of times.

I am installing Leap onto my Dell Laptop on to a separate Hard Drive so that I can use either Windows or Leap without dual booting from one hard drive. I have downloaded and made a bootable USB Drive using Rufus. My issue is that my Dell XPS laptop uses UEFI Bios and does not allow me to select the USB Drive itself. Instead it is asking for a specific file from the USB Stick. Can somebody please let me know which file I need to select to be able to boot and install Leap from? If you need any more infomation or if i am missing something please let me know and I will try to fill in.
Regards
Charles
I have no idea what Rufus does to your USB and you probably should be addressing your question to Rufus community. The standard way to create bootable openSUSE USB is to dd the image onto the full drive (not partition).
Hi there, many thanks for the reply. I will try to expand a bit more. I was hoping that the option to select the USB drive would be there however its not. When i enter Bios to select the bootable media, it asks you add a bootable device. When you go to add a bootable device it brings up the usb drive, but is asking for a specific file within the .opensuse iso file itself. I have tried to select different files with.efi file name but to no success.
