That would have eased the pain a bit - but no, this was an 'inside'
job. I'm sure the people behind it had good intentions (religious) but
like Newton's dog (Diamond), do not know how much damage they've
caused. Eg., a very pessimistic view would suggest that a few years
down the line, (in the absence of the stone plaque bearing the date +
the presence of authorities with one Nelson's eye and the other with
the $ sign on the pupil) could well 'forget' the age of the cross and
shift it elsewhere to make way for a new structure.
We allowed the cross on the corner (west) of the football ground to be
shifted to the eastern corner; no one's noticed the disappearance of
the cross on the property which now houses the new collectorate...
