The Accounting Roadmap is a suggested roadmap to guide you, credit-by-credit, through the accounting concentration and accounting graduate programs at the Costello College of Business at George Mason University.
The accelerated master of science in accounting is designed exclusively for high-performing students pursuing a BS in business with a concentration in accounting. Students can earn both a BS in business and an MS in accounting in just five years, while working toward the 150 credits needed for the CPA requirements.
You may formally apply for this program if you have a GPA of 3.0 or above and have earned at least 60 credits. Interested students should speak to their advisor for more information on the application process.

All students pursuing a Master of Business Administration with an Accounting Concentration or Specialization must complete the core courses. These courses will prepare students with a solid foundation in managerial accounting and finance while also helping them develop the skills to lead and strategize in organizations.

*Professional experience is determined on a case-by-case basis using a resume and any requested supporting documents. The LSUS Admissions Committee evaluates an individual's accomplishments, roles, and responsibilities to determine the total number of years of professional experience.

The basic purpose of accounting is to provide relevant information to management, investors, creditors, government and the general public. Accounting is an indispensable skill to running a business. Accountants participate in planning, analyzing and steering the activities of forms and individuals; providing tax advice and preparation services; and preparing statistics for private and government surveys.

Accounting professionals are responsible for solving complex problems within the business world, meaning that students must have a variety of tools and skills at their disposal. The Accounting Option prepares students for careers in private, government, non-profit and public accounting. Demand for accountants is extremely high as businesses work to plan, manage and control their operations. Graduates can serve as internal auditors, managerial accountants, tax examiners, budget analysts or government auditors. After completing this option, students are eligible to take the Certified Management Accounting (CMA) exam. If you want to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a minimum of 225 quarter hours or five years of college is required.
After completing the two-year Accounting Option, students are eligible to take the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam. Students who wish to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), however, should plan on spending three years in the program. To take the CPA exam, a student needs a minimum of 225 quarter hours or five years of college (a master degree is not required).
In addition to public accounting, the Accounting Option will thoroughly prepare students for careers in private, government and non-profit accounting. The curriculum is designed to enable graduates to fill a number of corporate positions such as internal auditor, managerial accountant and tax accountant. Graduates will also be prepared to serve in government positions such as tax examiner, budget analyst and government auditor. To focus in Accounting at Western Oregon University, 24 upper division credit hours in accounting are required. Completion of these courses will help qualify the student to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA*) and/or Certified Management Accountant (CMA**) exams.

This program prepares individuals to practice the profession of accounting and to perform related business functions. This includes instruction in accounting principles and theory, financial accounting, managerial accounting, cost accounting, budget control, tax accounting, legal aspects of accounting, reporting procedures, statement analysis, planning and consulting, business information systems, accounting research methods, professional standards and ethics, and applications to specific for-profit, public, and non-profit organizations.
NOTE: Students must complete all Business Administration Major Core Requirements and must complete Major Concentration Requirements (total of 30 units) in order to receive the certificate in the concentration area of their choice.
