So I was waiting to announce this at the next meeting, but our DNS changes got propagated a bit ahead of schedule, and the new Dallasrb.org site is live!

You can access it here: http://dallasrb.org and it will redirect you to our Heroku app (but hopefully stay on the same URL soon). Keep your bookmarks on dallasrb.org as I expect the Heroku domain to be temporary.

We're still making some tweaks to it, but you guys can all sign in with your GitHub accounts. We'll also be posting next week's meeting here, along with RSVP links. Everything else will remain the same.

Also relatively soon I'll be presenting the tech behind the site as well as a call for pull requests to help us tweak it some more.

Finally, if you find any bugs, please email me directly or report an issue on the site's GitHub repo here:

Thanks!

Hey Karthik, the site looks great!

I stumbled across it this afternoon.

I think there a thread on this email group earlier today about the only event being listed is March 5th.

Also, I get the "We're sorry but something went wrong" error page when I try to sign in with GitHub.

If there is anything I can do to help, let me know and I will work on it.  Also, would you rather continue to go through email or make issues on the github account?

Looks great! Let me (or any of the orgsync folks) know if you'd like a hand with it.

Does GitHub require you to register your site with them to do the sign in with GitHub?

If so then I bet the DNS is why this is not working.

For what it's worth, I didn't have any trouble signing in with GitHub.

Great looking site! I was able to login with Git creds without any issues as well. I did add an issue with regard to the hack night info needing to be added. I would gladly help contribute if needed.

Maybe an A/B test and include this on the B side

I have brought shame to the list...

Is there a scoring/leveling system we can use to improve our positioning on http://dallasrb.herokuapp.com/profiles ?   :D I know, I know, one criteria would actually be to show up at the meetings :p

Right now there isn't any explicity order being applied to the display profiles.  I considered sorting alphabetically by name when I was putting in the pagination, but wasn't really sure if we really wanted that.

And besides, if I did that, I wouldn't be the first profile in the list...

I just updated mine, so now Phillip isn't dead last.

Where are you pulling that avatar from?

I'm pretty sure it's Gravatar.

Alphabetically is probably the fairest thing to do (sorry David!). If anyone wants to open a PR for this please feel free!

And yes the avatars are pulled from GitHub which actually uses Gravatar.

We don't have a lot of people.  Is pagination really necessary?  We could just use 1 page for all of us :)  Then no one feels bad if they are not on the "front page"

I actually wasn't trying to stir up anything here and thought it was funnier more than anything :)

We could do like Facebook chat heads. Only make them bounce around the screen and collide. And Explode!

(I can hear the reply now: we're happy to review a pull request)

I love that ideaŠand lets make it work in IE6 :) I seriously actually love
that idea, like a "battle" tab.

I figured it would happen sooner or later.

I'll take a stab at it later tonight...unless someone beats me to it.

And just like the we determined a way to money-tize the site.

Pay for placement ... creating a page one, "featured consultants" area.

You would have to bid out others, Quibids style!

just joking of course!

I thought it wouldn't be necessary, but then Steve wrote an epic 4 line bio that forced us into it :)

btw Steve isn't the only one a 4 line profile. We're going to be enforcing a character limit on profiles so those of you that aren't into the whole brevity thing might want to proactively edit.

Hey, we could sort members by bio length -- the gamification of something or other

I'll work up a pull request

Ok, so this has turned into A Thing....

Why not indeed gamify it? Make it meaningful: points for meeting attendance, volunteer efforts, presentations, hosting major conferences. (Ok, that was sucking up.)

Hmmmm I vote for a simple gamification rules based on attendance to the monthly Ruby meetups bc I tend to think that our main driver should be getting a concentration of people together that enjoy Ruby. So business rules:

1) Sort by highest number of consecutive Ruby monthly meetups attended
2) Within the ties, sort by consecutive weekly meetups attended
3) Incase of tie there, sort by like sexiness or something! Haha idk

Just a thought!

It'd be cool if we could sort based on github activity.  Most active first.

So Scott added an 'epic sort' which randomizes the sort order based on the length of your bio. Right now I have it re-sorting every hour.

I like Justin's idea of using GitHub activity too. Maybe we can even have multiple sort options with a sidebar or something. I'm open for anything here and I'll review any pull request that comes my way.

Thanks guys, I love seeing everyone so engaged with this!

That is 'cause you are now on the 'team' page -- I had the same concern when I did not see my name.  I'm not sure what the distinction is, but my guess is because we often head up the hyper local meet-ups.

The way to solve this is simple.  Once a quarter / half year / year, Dallas Ruby holds a blood tournament.  Many shall enter, few shall come out alive.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
