Dear Friends at Bahart Chintan

The name Bharat Chintan, as far as I understand is to discuss about
serious matters affecting India - means not only it geography but
crucially its people.
The number of people affected by the subject in issue is over 85% of
the populalation for reasons mentioned briefly by Sadanand Patwardhan.
less than 15% of the population only come within the bracket of the
following
"There are Hindu students whose beliefs would be hurt by such an act.
We are accountable to them and hence we are against the festival,"
said a member of the ABVP body on campus.

For over 3000 years the 15% have been persecuting over 85% of the
population with their belief about beef, untouchability etc. hence the
large scale extreme poverty of over 1/2 of India's population and
double standard of boasting about ancient civilisation, economic
growth etc. It is high time that the members of all educated people,
particularly Bharat Chintan come forward to express in categorical
terms their stand on issues like the one in question. It is easy to
talk about nuclear and international matters and accuse others, but
when it comes to our own citizens we keep a meaningful silence. This
is the general practice seen also in email groups like Bharat Chintan.
Please, members prove the metal of the name Bharat chintan.

Thanks,
Eugene Culas

Beef was on the menu of Vedic Savarnas (Brahmin+Kshatriya+Vaishya).
They even ate venison, horse (Ashwamedh Yagna), fowls, and other
animals, which were first offered as sacrifice (Naivedya) to Vedic
deities. Later under the influence of Jain & Buddhist teachings of
Ahimsa, the vegetarianism entered into Hindu practice. Yet, the Shudra
and Anti-Shudra (Dalits & Adivasis) continued with the practice of
animal consumption. While beef is Halal food as per Muslim culture &
practice, the consumption of beef was neither an imported practice nor
is it alien. BJP in their own version of “Hindutva”, which has little
to do with history, has time and again imposed ban of Cow (i.e. even
bullocks & buffaloes) slaughter whenever & wherever it is in power.
This action doesn’t take into account ground realities. These animals
are predominantly owned by farmers and cattle keepers. No milch cow or
capable draught animal will ever be sacrificed by its owners, who are
well versed with its economic potential. It is only when animal
becomes old or dries up and thus loses its economic value that they
think of parting with it under great emotional strain. But poverty is
merciless. They cannot afford to feed an animal that gives no return.
Such cattle finds its way to the slaughter houses. Poor owners realize
some money through sale. Also, beef is a cheap source of protein for
Dalits and Adivasis. They too are deprived of it through such bans on
slaughter. There are heart rending tales in Dalit literature of how
people had to survive by consuming carcasses found of animals, who had
died through unnatural causes (drowning/ electrocution/ starvation) or
diseases. India’s cattle population is largest in the world. So there
is no fear that Gau Mata will become extinct here. There is a serious
case for BJP to reconsider its policy and not be blinded by deceptive,
defective & self-serving readings of Hinduism.

Trouble brews at Eflu over beef in menu
TNN | May 3, 2011, 12.24am IST

HYDERABAD: The beef row on English and Foreign Languages University
(Eflu) campus intensified on Monday. While Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi
Parishad (ABVP) activists maintained that they would attack anyone who
cooks beef on campus, a large group of students lead by Dalit Adivasi
Bahujan Minority Students' Association (DABMSA) and Telangana
Students' Association, said that they will continue the agitation till
beef gets accepted in the hostel food guide.

Trouble started on campus on April 30 when dalit students of the
university who tried to conduct a "beef festival" were allegedly
beaten up by ABVP activists who also reportedly desecrated the food.

On Monday, beef supporters initiated a "food bandh" on campus,
closing down the hostel messes, canteens and stores demanding
inclusion of beef dishes in the mess menu. The students said that no
food will be available on campus if their demands were not met.

The campus remained tense on Monday with several student groups
holding meetings with university authorities demanding immediate
action on those who indulged in vandalism on campus. Considering the
sensitivity of the situation, police personnel from Osmania University
police station were deputed at Eflu campus.

"We have started a non-cooperation and have been on a hunger strike
since Sunday night till our demands are met. We have decided to
continue with the agitation till our demands are met," said L Rajesh,
a member DABMSA. DASMA demanded that the university authorities should
issue a statement saying that the students have the right to hold
similar food festivals on campus.

Meanwhile, the issue drew attention of student groups of other
Universities including Osmania University (OU) and University of
Hyderabad (UoH). Dalit Students' Union (DSU) of UoH campus has joined
DABMSA in the protest by bring out posters in support. "University as
an institution of learning should protect the interests of dalit
students also and prevent a cultural negation that has been going on
in the country since long," a DSU poster read. Some social and human
rights activists are also expected to extend support to students. "We
are expecting that a public interest litigation (PIL) will be filed by
Karthik Navayan, an activist to get a court order supporting the
inclusion of beef in the hostel menu," said a member of DABMSA.

Meanwhile, ABVP students against whom complaints were filed by
DABMSA at OU police station said that including beef in the mess menu
with the permission of university administration is out of question.
"There are Hindu students whose beliefs would be hurt by such an act.
We are accountable to them and hence we are against the festival,"
said a member of the ABVP body on campus.

Meanwhile, the university authorities said that they have set up an
enquiry committee to look into the incident. "Once the enquiry
committee ascertains facts about the incident we will look into the
demands of students," said Nagamallika Gudipaty, dean, school of
communication and spokesperson Eflu.

*Creation of a casteless and peaceful society is indeed the first step
towards just, egalitarian, and harmonious society. A society of equals,
neither unequal nor more-equals, beyond the strings of caste, class, gender,
race, ethnicity, etc. Otherwise it leads to social oppression, political
exploitation, economic deprivation, cultural domination, gender
discrimination, class isolation, deliberate exclusion. Lets’ believe in a
society beyond this....*
