Dear members,
Vishu was celebrated on April 22 this time at a new venue, the Kerala Club in Connaught Place. Despite a slightly lower attendance, the celebrations once again saw enthusiastic participation. This time we had a special guest, Dr Sujata Sankranti. She is a retired English Professor from Sri Venkateshwara college, Delhi University and an author of two books, "The Warp and the Weft and Other Stories" published a decade ago and the more recent novel Ïn the Shadow of Legends. Way back in 1998, she won the commonwealth prize for the title story of the Warp and the Weft. You can read about her
here and
here.
We requested her to speak and she obliged. She is daughter of Dr Godavarma (Kilimanoor), Professor at University college, Thiruvananthapuram and on the mother's side is the granddaughter of A R Raja Raja Varma, the renowned grammarian in Malayalam known as Kerala Panini" for codifying grammar rules in the language. She spoke briefly about her novel, set in Kerala and In Russia. Incidentally, she is having a reading session of the novel at the Russian Centre, Feroze Shah Road on May 11.
The proceedings started with prayer by Manju Anil. Vishu Kaineettam was distributed by Dakksh patron C S Rajan, Thiagarajan chettan and Dr Sujata. The cultural programme included songs by Manju, Maya, Aravind. Ashwin, Amal and Aathira. Amal also chipped in with a violin recital later. Good work Amal ! Keep it up. Niranjan also told us a story. Thank you Niranjan, we love hearing from you.
The Presidential address was delivered by Vijayan Punnathur. Rajettan also spoke about Vishu and related matters. This time, we also made a small beginning in sharing some of the interesting stories about the history of various families. I spoke about Poonjar family and Saju about Samoothiri. We expect more such stories to emerge in the next meetings. The topic need not be confined to just history, it could be about interesting places, personalities, rites and festivals. The aim is to make our gatherings more meaningful and enriching experience for all.
This time, in the fun and games section, we had a competition exclusively for women, drawing the moustache. The participants were blindfolded and asked to draw the moustache on the pencil sketch of a face pinned on the wall. The winner was Maya Mukundan.
As always, suggestions, criticism, contributions in whatever form, including writings are most welcome.
That's all right now.
regards,
Nandakumar
