Dear all

Forwarding a collection of fairly recent news stories highlighting the importance of fighting for ethical standards in the practice of AI

As you may be aware Artificial Intelligence is rapidly evolving as an extremely powerful tool impacting every facet of human life. This demands that all practice of AI should conform to common ethical standards.

193 sovereign countries (all  members of the UNESCO) have already come out with a joint statement on the subject. You can read the statement at UN website. The link is reproduced below for your convenience. They have initiated the work towards evolving global ethical standards for the practitioners of AI in different areas

Ethics of AI is not a subject that can be left to be handled by governments of sovereign countries alone. Professional and social organisations and socially committed individuals have a duty and right to contribute to the evolution and maintanance of ethical standards in AI.

Hence please go through the links and contribute your might to the cause.

 Dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence
 Daron Acemoğlu 23Nov2021

Over the last decade, artificial intelligence has made great advances and influenced almost all industries. This column argues that the current AI technologies are more likely to generate various adverse social consequences, rather than the promised gains. It provides examples of the potential dangers for product markets, labour markets, and democratic institutions, and emphasises that the main problem is not AI itself, but the way leading firms are approaching data and their use. Policy should focus on redirecting technological change to create new capabilities and opportunities for workers and citizens.
