In what ways is STL increasing its use of AI for HR? We started shifting to really looking at AI coming into the onboarding to offboarding process. It was not so much scale and speed we were seeking alone, but it was a better employee experience. We wanted to be sure that there was a consistent experience for employees or candidates joining us. So, we started the journey asking how can we start engaging with employees from minus 30 days from coming onboard, to day zero joining [the organization], to plus 30 days after day zero. So, it became a very interesting journey using AI in the onboarding process.
What advice can you offer on implementing AI with existing backend HR software? "Change management is a very critical success factor, I think, for any AI enablement and gamification processes. Even simple automation requires good change management. I think one of the things that in my personal experience has worked very well is making sure you have a strong sponsor team that spells out what is required. So you have functional expertise from HR, but then you partner with strong functional expertise on the IT side. And when those two meet together, I think you get a fantastic solution. You also have to ensure a strong user interface, which is critical for the user experience to be great. And most importantly, you have to have strong integration into the existing systems.

Loss of sense of smell (anosmia) or taste (ageusia) are distinctive symptoms of COVID-19 and are among the earliest and most often reported indicators of the acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is notable from other viral symptoms in its sudden onset and the absence of mucosal blockage1. While a large fraction of COVID-19 patients report loss of smell or taste, the underlying mechanism is unclear2. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of COVID-19-related loss of smell or taste, having collected self-reported data from over 1 million 23andMe research participants as described previously3. By asking study participants to report the symptoms they encountered during their COVID-19 experience, we identified SARS-CoV-2 test-positive individuals who reported a loss of smell or taste and contrasted them with test-positive individuals who did not report a loss of smell or taste.
Participants in this study were recruited from the customer base of 23andMe, a personal genetics company. Participants provided informed consent and participated in the research online, under a protocol approved by the external Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs-accredited institutional review board, Ethical and Independent Review Services. Participants were included in the analysis based on consent status as checked at the time data analyses were initiated.
We tested for association using logistic regression, assuming additive allelic effects. For tests using imputed data, we used the imputed dosages rather than best-guess genotypes. We included covariates for age, age squared, sex, a sex:age interaction, the top ten principal components to account for residual population structure and dummy variables to account for the genotyping platform. The association test P value was computed using a likelihood ratio test, which in our experience is better behaved than a Wald test on the regression coefficient. Results for the X chromosome were computed similarly, with men coded as if they were homozygous diploid for the observed allele.
My Hollings experience helped me build the tools to succeed in graduate school: it taught me to think critically about issues impacting our marine fisheries, improved my scientific communication, and helped me win prestigious awards including the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship offsite link. In fact, my Hollings research project has recently been published as a featured paper in Transactions of the American Fisheries Society offsite link!
The Hollings internship was an amazing opportunity to gain hands-on research experience, attend conferences, and dive into the marine science community. I am truly grateful for the chance to be part of the program and for where it has led me.

As an undergraduate student at Ohio University I had a fascination with lightning and the NOAA Hollings program gave me an excellent opportunity to explore the field during my internship with the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Miami, Florida. It is through this experience that I developed my research skills and connected with other talented students and professionals. I am now studying how forecasters can use a new space-based lightning sensor to improve forecasts and severe storm research. By pairing the sensor with other tools like satellite imagery and radar, we can use the rate of lightning flashes and their size to better understand thunderstorm severity . The NOAA Hollings Scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for any student in the environmental sciences to learn, network, and most importantly, explore all the careers your field has to offer.
I've loved being a Rep because I've gotten to collaborate with others, and it's also helped to build skills that will be really helpful later in life such as communication, planning and teamwork. Not to mention the most important thing: it's been fun! I've been trying new things that I would never have tried if I hadn't become a Rep. Overall, it's a great experience and something I'll definitely remember. We've also had great workshops such as learning about marketing with Conner (Schafer) and event planning with Lena! My favourite thing is the Replit Showcase which I've done each month and I would love to see continued with the next cohort. It was inspired by the Replit Creates showcases which both me and TechPanda loved and wanted to continue with!
