Hi,

We're an accessible book producer serving public library patrons in Canada, and we're working on a new HTML-first workflow for ebook production. This means we want to be able to convert a cleaned-up EPUB 3 to a DAISY 202 full-text/full-audio  or an EPUB 3 with media overlays. I'm wondering if someone could tell me if  this is something in the works for Pipeline 2?
Currently we can produce full-audio/full-text DAISY and EPUB 3 with media overlays from DTBook XML, but as we're moving away from DTBook XML to HTML, this will no longer work... It would be awesome to continue to be able to produce books with synchronized audio, using EPUB 3 as the base format. Any suggestions on how to do this going forward, ideally using an open source tool like Pipeline, would also be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Farrah

Dear Farrah,

Extending TTS support to HTML-to-EPUB3 and EPUB3-to-EPUB3 is something that has been requested before. We have incorporated it into our 2018 planning, however it is not a priority at the moment. This means that the feature will be added if time allows or if we get contributions from outside.

I don't know how to do this right now with other tools. Romain, do you have any suggestions maybe?

Kind regards,
Bert

I would like to echo Farrah Little's request as well. Just how does something get put onto the Pipeline priority list?

No, unfortunately I don't know of any easy solution.
One could always use another way to produce the audio, and then use an alignment tool like aeneas [1], but that's not very straightforward.

The Pipeline priority list is defined in the project’s charter, which is developed once a year by the DAISY staff based on members’ feedback, then submitted to the DAISY board for approval. We're low on resources, so we generally had to prioritize work related to stability and maintainability over new features.
If an organization wants to prioritize something, they would have to contribute to the development (or raise the issue in preparation for and during DAISY board meetings).

Best,
Romain.

Thanks Bert & Romain. That's positive news that it's been requested before and is in the 2018 planning. It really would be useful for our readers.
Unfortunately we're not DAISY members, but we utilize open source tools for all our work and donate to different tool creators every year; we'd be more than happy to donate to DAISY if it's possible! We couldn't make books for readers without the Pipeline. :)
Cheers,
Farrah
