Like it or not, unboxing is a ritual for many Apple users, and when there's a new product on the streets, Flickr is home to many Mac users' latest acquisitions. We don't feature unboxing photosets for no-longer-new products all that often here at TUAW, but upon seeing a photoset on Flickr from user ntr23 this morning we couldn't help but share these frankly incredible unboxing shots of an iPhone.
Lego men abound in the set, with precision unboxing being captured (including ladders to help scale those heights) in a truly amazing set of shots. Yes, it's Apple unboxing shots. But of all the unboxing shots we've seen here at TUAW, these have quite possibly captured our hearts as the best we've seen to date.
Be sure to check out ntr23's full set on Flickr and admire these works of art.

You can help to flesh out the dark alternate 1985 in next year's Watchmen movie, by becoming the ad agency for psychotic ex-superhero Adrian Veidt, aka Ozymandias. Director Zack Snyder says he realized there were a lot of TV screens in the background during the film, which needed to be filled with images. So he's launching a contest for you to create your own ads for Veidt Enterprises' products, including perfumes, shoes and air travel. (He provides logos and animated product images, plus a couple of sample ads like the one above.) But Watchmen isn't the first dark scifi movie to have a contest for user-generated video.
Last year, dystopian future movie Babylon A.D. held a contest on MySpace to generate user video to appear on video screens in the background of some of the film's scenes:
[Director] Mathieu [Kassovitz]'s goal is to enhance the authenticity of this film by adding futuristic and innovative ads and fake news footage. We will integrate them, throughout the film on various screens : futuristic TVs, personal tablets, vehicles and especially on a huge scale, on the sides of New York buildings. That is why he thought he should launch this contest to give a chance to anyone who wishes to show their vision of the future.

Here's Dr. Harry F. Olson, director of the Acoustical and Electromagnetical Laboratory of RCA, with his newly patented phonetic typewriter. Looking very similar to the Machine That Types What Is Spoken To It of 1913, Olson's typewriter took dictation through a microphone and turned it into type via what the New York Times called a "speech-analysis mechanism." Click through for a closer look at this grandparent of voice-recognition technology.

A code stored in the machine is linked to the keys of the typewriter. The machine listens to each sound spoken into the microphone, codes it, and when it matches any symbol in the stored code the corresponding keys are struck.

Digital Journal has relaunched their citizen journalism site with a range of new features.
Digital Journal offers a Citizen Journalism site in a similar fashion to Instablogs, OhMyNews, Newsvine, Norg Media and others. Members contribute news items for the site, and in theory the wisdom of the crowd combines to create a Google friendly news resource. Where Digital Journal perhaps is a little different in this space is that it revenue shares with contributors, and has paid out $38,000 to CitJ’s already (note I said in this space, the model has been used by blog networks for years, and the line between this and blogging is pretty thin).
The new features include collaboration tools that is claimed to set the site apart from the competition: “Blogging, paid news reporting, a massive photo department, social networking tools like Groups, and much more.”
DigitalJournal comScore numbers aren’t encouraging (50,000 page views in March), but I don’t hate it, it’s just that its yet another CitJ site. Instablogs took $3 million in March so there’s interest (and money) in this space still, so DigitalJournal may be well positioned going forward; besides: getting paid anything in the land of expecting your users to build your Web 2.0 fortune for free is always a positive.

Okay, now you can catch 'em all.
Shaymin (known as Sheimi in Japan) was first introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl as a legendary Pokémon (meaning it only appears once in a game), but unless you've ended up resorting to cheats for the game, you haven't seen it yet. Reason being that the only way to get your hands on Shaymin is by receiving an item called Oak's Letter from a Nintendo-sponsored event.
In Japan, that event is going to happen this summer in the form of the screening of the latest Pokémon movie, Pokémon Diamond & Pearl the Movie: Giratina and the Sky's Bouquet: Shaymin, which opens July 19th. No word yet on how audiences outside of Japan can get it.
Oh, and what is Shaymin's special power? It creates a field of flowers around it, using its flower-like appearance to blend in. Flower power to all!

Each year humans move around 7 gigatons of earth. Some projects result in vast improvements for human living; others, not so much.

The idea of cutting a canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific through Panama was first proposed in 1524, with plans drawn up by 1529. Various nations considered the idea, but for reasons of war, international politics, or the huge expense, the project was postponed for nearly four centuries. A French company worked on the canal from 1881 to 188, and the Americans finished it between 1904 and 1914. The French had excavated 30 million cubic yards of earth, and the Americans dug another 238 million. The total amount of earth moved was four times the original estimate. However, using the canal saved thousands of miles and months of travel time by ship for voyages between the east and west coasts of North America.

The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China is slated to be the largest hydroelectric project on earth when it becomes fully operational in 2011. Plans were first offered in 1914, but revolution, wars, and political instability delayed construction until 1994. The massive project has been criticized internationally for the displacement of 1.5 million people who lived where the new lake is, and for the environmental disruption which is believed to have already led to the extinction of at least one species, the Baiji or Yangtze River Dolphin. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam moved about 13,400,000 cubic yards of earth.

The first section of the New York City subway opened in 1904. Construction has continued ever since, with new lines, repairs, and replacement lines under constant construction. On most lines, the street is torn up to dig the tunnel, then the road is replaced. Tunnel-boring technology is necessary for the deeper lines, lines through rock, and those that cross under the East River. The system is now 722 miles long. It’s difficult to estimate the volume of the underground sections, but in 1904 when the very first lines were opened, 3.5 million cubic yards of earth and rock had been removed.

The latest innovation in coal mining in the Appalachians is mountaintop removal, a method that exposes coal seams faster and more cheaply than deep mining or strip mining. Mountaintops are blasted away, and up to 250 million cubic yards of earth and rock are leveled into the surrounding valleys. The effects on the local environment can be devastating.

The Big Dig is officially named the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston. It’s a 3.5 mile tunnel to route vehicle traffic underneath the city. Construction began in 1991 and sections of the tunnel were opened between 2003 and 2006. The initial cost of the project was estimated to be $2.8 billion, but the final cost was close to $15 billion. Charges of corruption, inadequate materials, and a fatal collapse accompanied the project. The completed tunnel saw the excavation of 16 million cubic yards of earth.

The Dutch have been building dikes to hold back the ocean for over 2,000 years. Today, 27% of The Netherlands is below sea level. When the sea encroaches, water is pumped back out, traditionally with windmill power, and in modern times with diesel and electric pumps. The Delta project was launched as a reaction to the North Sea Flood of 1953 that killed 1,836 people. It consisted of raising the height of 10,250 miles of dikes to levels that would protect the country from unexpectedly high sea floods. Construction of the original plan was completed in 1997. Statistics are hard to pin down because the Delta Works are seen as a series of projects, but it’s been said that millions and millions of cubic feet of earth have been moved, with more added every year as land reclamation and improvement projects continue.

WABOT-2, an intelligent humanoid keyboard player developed by Waseda University in the 1980s, was considered the most advanced robot of its time. In addition to camera eyes that could read musical notation and deft hands that could tap out tunes of average difficulty, WABOT-2 could listen to accompanying singers and adjust its tempo, as well as carry on basic conversation. The android demonstrated its musical skills at Expo ‘85 in Tsukuba, Japan with a performance of Kitaro’s new age classic “Silk Road.” (Watch a clip.)
Built in order to develop the basic technology, strength and skills for robots of the 21st century, WABOT-2 was equipped with a hierarchical system of 80 microprocessors modeled after the human nervous system, and its arms and legs had 50 degrees of freedom — more than any other robot in existence at the time. Waseda University regards WABOT-2 as a landmark achievement in the evolution of personal robots.

The question behind the question, for a lot of the current OOXML debate, seems to be: can Microsoft really be trusted to behave? We shall see.
On verra bien.

Much has been written about Web 2.0 over the past year or two. We have observed the rapid rise of online giants such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. The value, or at least perceived value, of these companies has grown along with their user bases – YouTube was bought for $1.65 billion, MySpace was snatched by News Corp for $580 million back in 2005 and Facebook is worth $15 billion. However, many critics question the business value of these communities. The advertising model has proven less lucrative than expected as companies struggle to monetize their user bases and traffic. Many point to Facebook’s failed Beacon platform as an example of the difficulties of extracting value from Web 2.0.
The business model savior of Web 2.0 may come in the form of Enterprise 2.0. According to Forrester, companies are set to spend $5 billion on social networking by 2013. The report also states that 56% of North American companies see Web 2.0 as high priority in 2008. The urgency is well founded as companies struggle to give their employees tools that they already use on the open internet and have come to expect in the workplace. However, in contrast to tools on the open internet, companies need to pay much more attention to things like information quality and security, compliance, current business processes and decision making structures. Hence the opportunity for Web 2.0 companies to customize and create offerings that take into account the unique needs of the Enterprise 2.0. Lucrative subscription and software sales revenues will follow. Can you say Facebook Inside?

NEW YORK — Is that Miley Cyrus flashing some skin?
Less-than-wholesome photos of a girl bearing a close resemblance to the 15-year-old superstar are making the rounds on the Internet.
One photo shows the Cyrus look-alike tugging at her white tank top to reveal a green bra. In another shot, she flaunts her bare midriff while draped over a young male, who rests his hand on her hip. Another shot shows her cuddling up to the same guy.
This isn't the first time risque photos of someone resembling Cyrus have circulated online. In recent months, shots have surfaced of a girl posing in her underwear and bikini.

Cyrus, star of the TV show "Hannah Montana" and role model for countless young girls, is one of the biggest _ and most G-rated _ acts in the country. Cyrus' "Best of Both Worlds" tour sold out arenas, and her successful 3-D concert film collected $31.3 million in its opening weekend in February.
The upcoming "Hannah Montana" movie will be filmed in Tennessee and Los Angeles, beginning early next month. The movie is scheduled for release May 1, 2009.
The actress-singer's publicists Jill Fritzo and Meghan Prophet didn't return messages from The Associated Press seeking comment. An assistant to Cyrus' manager, Jason Morey, referred the AP to Prophet.
