Norman Horowitz : Is The Democratic Congress Willing to Challenge the Gigantic Media Companies, the FCC, and the Washington Lobbyists in Order to Save What Remains of a "Free" Mass Media in Our Country ?

    "

I have been paying attention to the FCC since the late sixties when I was with CBS and the Commission issued its Prime Time Access, Financial Interest and Syndication Rules. In my opinion and in the opinion of many, these rules were all politically motivated. In the FCC report and order, the vast majority of reasons given by the FCC for the rulemaking were wrong, not arguably wrong, but totally wrong, and the FCC knew it!

I concluded at that time that the FCC was just doing what the incumbent administration wanted them to do and it mattered not one teeny little bit that the rulemaking was wrong and wrong big time. It appeared to me that the "regulators" were told by Nixon that he wanted to punish the Networks, and the "regulators" did what they were told.

In the intervening forty years the FCC has continued to do more of the same which is to respond to the wishes and interests of the administration, and the public interest is just an expression used from time to time in order to justify what they are doing.

Forty years ago I wished that the FCC commissioners were "doing what they believed to be was right" but sadly they weren't.

Ii is with great sadness that I say the same of the FCC Chairman Kevin Martin today. I have many reasons for questioning his motives, yet it is hard for me to believe that he believes in the reasons that he has given for revising the cross ownership regulations.

I see the evil hands of not less then three groups, and probably four running congruently as it pertains to this issue.

First we have General Electric, the Walt Disney Company, CBS/Viacom, and News Corp all of whom want to get bigger and to have more power and make more money. (Money makes the world go around.)

We also have the lobbyists retained by these companies to do what they do. (Money makes the world go around.)

Then of course we have the legislators who rely on these lobbyists to raise money for their reelection campaigns and just love the issue. (Money makes the world go around.)

And lest we forget, most of all the President and his entire administration who will continue to operate in the dark and in secret as long as they can, and only fear the mass media and the "searchlights" that they own. (Power AND money make the world go around.)

Martin somehow equates the number of stations operating in a market as providing a diversity of voices in news. The only "VERY LOUD VOICES" in America belong to the Television Networks and Newspapers.

If we had 63 Television stations operating in Los Angeles, I would not want one of the "really big guys" owning the Los Angeles Times as it is bad enough that it is owned by the Tribune Company.

The independence of the New York Times is vital to our country. Not one of the New York Television stations speaks to any issues other then the "man bites dog" local stuff. New York Television stations do little to serve in the public interest, and certainly NEVER as it pertains to National issues.

The Washington Post contributes to the airing of different points of view and does investigative journalism unlike what the local stations do most of the time.

I can either laugh or I can cry as I think of General Electric owning the New York Times, or the Walt Disney Company owning The Washington Post, or News Corp owning The Wall Street Journal! (This is a very small joke.)

When I hear Chairman Kevin Martin speak about his silly statistical approach to why cross ownership restrictions are no longer needed I want to scream because he has the power to manifest what he says, and he just did.

The "selling" of the elimination of cross ownership is a "Canard" but sadly "it just aint" a duck.

    Chairman Martin, shame on you.

Source Close To Ask.com Debunks Rumor Of Teoma Engine Replacement

    ask

A rumor peddled by Peter Kafka of Silicon Alley Insider in a article sent to press Friday morning, concerning IAC’s alleged consideration of the replacement of Ask’s search engine technology, Teoma, with the vastly more popular system employed by Google, has effectively been debunked. Reuters has now reported that source “familiar with the matter” has declared any such purported murmurs as “incorrect.”

Ask is in a rather odd situation at the moment. While its share of the search market has grown somewhat in the last few months, a likely result of the hard-charging advertising efforts it has unleashed as of late, its parent company, IAC, is traversing quite the rough patch. Great trouble could brew over IAC’s very public dispute with Liberty Media, its present controlling shareholder, which Michele Gershberg of Reuters, in relaying word delivered by various analysts, has said will be headed to a contentious trial next month. Such a clash could make for an unsavory distraction for IAC as it takes on the task of furthering the painstaking growth of Ask, following many quarters of relatively unsubstantial increases. Already IAC has employed a very large financial investment leveraged to push Ask into a greater gain-making trajectory, and though numbers are on the ascent, it’s arguable that the returns may not be viewed as worthwhile as many had hoped or foreseen.

The speculation of Ask’s retirement of Teoma is said to be partly responsible for IAC’s stock to fall 7 percent Friday. IAC left the evening markets Friday at $19.90.

Free download of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods

    "
Neil Gaiman's publisher Harper Collins has put his magnificent novel American Gods online for free reading as an experiment to see free digital copies sell print books.

This is a great idea -- it's really exciting to see publishers trying to get actual data about the market, rather than simply condemning all copying as piracy and hoping that the Internet just goes away.

However, I think that Harper Collins got this one wrong. They've put the text of American Gods up in a wrapper that loads pictures of the pages from the printed book, one page at a time, with no facility for offline reading. The whole thing runs incredibly slowly and is unbelievably painful to use. I think we can be pretty sure that no one will read this version instead of buying the printed book -- but that's only because practically no one is going to read this version, period.

The fact is that the full text of American Gods has been online for years, and can be located with a single Google query. I managed to download the entire text of the book in less time than it took me to get the Harper Collins edition to load the first page of Chapter One (literally!). The "security" that Harper Collins has bought with its clunky, kudgey experiment is nonexistent: pirates will just go get the pirate edition.

Unfortunately, the "security" has also undermined the experiment's value as a tool for getting better intelligence about the market. This isn't going to cost Neil any sales, but it's also not going to buy him any. We take our books home and read them in a thousand ways, in whatever posture, room, and conditions we care to. No one chains our books to our desks and shows us a single page at a time. This experiment simulates a situation that's completely divorced from the reality of reading for pleasure. As an experiment, this will prove nothing about ebooks either way.

    It's a terrible pity.

Greg Saunders : Hillary's Biggest Failure

    "

I think Hillary Clinton is absolutely right to suggest that she's been criticized in the press more than any other candidate, but the way I see it, her fame is a two-edged sword. While she gets held to a different standard due to her fame, she wouldn't be where she is now if it weren't for her name recognition and the fact that she inherited her husband's political machine. Just as it's puzzling that she somehow deserves credit for all the good things that happened during the 90's but none of the bad, if she's willing to capitalize on the unique advantages of her position as the inheritor of the legacy of the previous president (and all the political and fundraising power that comes along with it), she should have been prepared to deal with the unique challenges that come along with that as well.

For a candidate who constantly touts herself for being "prepared" to be president, Clinton's lack of preparation in dealing with an antagonistic media doesn't bode well for her prospects in a general election (much less her ability to govern). A smart campaign would take media bias as a given and come up with a plan to mitigate these negatives, yet this week, Hillary has settled on the strategy of whining about the press being mean to her, seemingly blind to the fact that this is an industry full of yellow journalists who have spent the past fifteen years printing and broadcasting some truly shameful muck. Was the Clinton campaign really naive enough to think they'd be any different this year?

With hindsight being 20/20, it seems to me that the Clinton campaign's strategy should have been to treat their candidate like an underdog all along, highlighting every trivial item written about Hillary and using her quasi-bully pulpit to use these examples as "proof" that the media it out to get her. Instead, they spent most of the past year insisting on Hillary's "inevitability" and reveling in the press's willingness to help them write the storyline. Yet for all their media savvy in using early polling and press laziness to declare the nomination over before it began, they seem to have made the mistake of believing their own bullshit and got caught off-guard when the pendulum of press opinion predictably swung back and hit them in the ass. Once again, this doesn't really do much to convince me that she'd be a good general election candidate or that she'd be "ready on day one" to deal with an hostile press.

Thankfully, a Clinton candidacy is something we won't need to worry about for much longer.

jesus.jpg Heroes the TV show may not return until the fall, but you can spend the countless hours until then listening to Heroes the soundtrack CD. NBC/Universal is releasing the soundtrack on March 18th, allowing fans the chance to hear, amongst the 18 songs on the CD, the first studio recording from the Jesus and Mary Chain in ten years.

The soundtrack is being put together with the full co-operation of the TV show's executive producers Allan Arkush and Tim Kring. NBC/Universal's Shelli Hill explained why the show needed an official soundtrack:

The producers of 'Heroes' view music as something that helps inspire them and define the show, and 'Heroes' fans are such avid fans that they are constantly looking for more... Plus, we wanted to give them something right now in the time frame while they are waiting for the next new episodes.
If you translate that into English, then I think you'll find she said "The show's not on right now, but we figured we could get some money from the more obsessive fans anyway."

Tipster Felwrathe forwarded an article to us the other day by Forbes.com writer Michael Noer entitled "The Future of Video Games." He puts Warcraft in this category as well - despite the fact that some would still call it a Computer game rather than a video game (or the more elegant term, vidcon). And while he does manage not to take potshots at the game as others have, he still makes a few somewhat surprising predictions about what the future holds.

Lost Goes Time Traveling and We Sort It Out for You [Lost Recap]

    "

When my husband got home from band practice last night, I had good and bad news for him. Last night's episode of Lost was the best in a long time, I told him, maybe one of the best ever--but, alas, our VCR didn't record it. (I know, we don't have TiVo, we live in the dark ages.) "The Constant" was a return to first- or second-season form: fast paced, entertaining, and enlightening. When it threatened to end on a note veering into soap opera territory, it came roaring back with one of those great Twilight Zone surprise twist endings that make Lost, when it's good, so very good. Let's get down to spoilers and discussion after the jump.

There are four reasons I liked this episode so much: (1) Desmond is one of my favorite characters. Yes, his looks and accent are part of it, but there's something about his everyday humanity that really appeals. He's stuck in the middle of something he doesn't understand--first the hatch and all that it entailed, now time-travel--yet he tries his best to stay on an even keel. He doesn't need to be a hero, like Jack, or a shaman, like Locke--or fall prey to sanctimony as they have. Last night Des nearly lost his marbles, but who can blame him? By the way, the quick cuts between 1996 and 2004 were almost too much, but I think the editing really helped viewers experience Desmond's extreme disorientation.

    (2) I love time-travel stories (the BBC's awesome Life on Mars, for example). It makes perfect sense, given my love of history. I mean who doesn't want to get in the time machine and go see what the dinosaurs looked like or solve a historical mystery? Of course, literature and movies have proven that such travels are fraught with difficulty and danger, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like getting caught in an erratic loop between 1996 and 2004. (Though given a choice, I'll take 1996, for completely shallow reasons pertaining to age and weight.)

    (3) This episode cemented my fondness for the "absent-minded professor," Daniel Faraday. I think he's the most appealing and interesting of the new characters--not surprising given he's the guy who seems to know most about what's actually happening on the island in a physical/scientific sense.

    (4) I think "The Constant" is about as contained an episode as you're going to get with Lost (barring the reviled-by-some "Exposé"). The story had a beginning, middle, and end, the latter of which provided a bit of closure instead of a cliffhanger. Now, I like cliffhangers just fine, but I think we all can agree that too many of them = too many unanswered questions = viewer frustration and burnout.

    A few more observations:

    • I want to believe that this episode explains Desmond's presence in the military prison back in season two's "Live Together, Die Alone," i.e., he went AWOL to find Daniel Faraday, but I think the timeline might be off.

    • Still haven't seen hide nor hair of either Michael or Ben's Double (time-traveling Ben?), both of whom have been theorized as Ben's possible shipboard mole. Granted, we haven't been much past the sick bay yet--and George Minkowski says Sayid and Desmond have "a friend" on board.

    • Minkowski's having the same time-travel issues as Desmond. Of course, the big question here is whether or not he's really dead. If you die in one of your, um, timeslots do you die in the other as well?

    • How cool is it that Penny's evil dad is bidding on the only known artifact of The Black Rock: the first-mate's journal, owned by the family of Tovar Hanso? (Though I have to wonder how Desmond knew to find him at the auction ... big suspension of disbelief required here.)

    • Really happy that Desmond and Penny reconnected. (Does this mean I'm a shipper?)

    • Love the idea of having a constant to keep you grounded and avoid time-travel freakout. Isn't that what we all want anyway?

Jay Glatfelter : On Lost : "The Constant"

    "

    2008-02-29-Lost1.jpg

In television, there are funny moments, sad moments and great moments. Then there are those moments where the credits for the episode start to roll and you give out a big "What the HELL?" Last night's episode of Lost not only continued this season's thrilling momentum; it proved to fans that even in its fourth season, it still leaves us with our jaws hanging open.

There was so much going on in this episode, which gave us more of Desmond's already brilliant, headache-inducing story. Add in a whole other leap into physics, time travel and the unknown -- and now we have (more and more becoming one of my favorite characters) Daniel Faraday getting thrown into Desmond's sci-fi/love story odyssey. This was the make of possibly one of my favorite Lost episodes ever.

I currently nominate Desmond David Hume as the most intriguing character on "Lost". Not only does he have the best love story on the show and dare I say on television today (come on, you know you were getting a little misty-eyed at the end...guys, you too), but his back stories provide some of the most thought provoking ideas on the show and a great deal of the mysteries on the island. This episode threw so much at us, so let's take a look at what we have so far.

    Desmond: Lover, Button Pusher, Future-Vision-Amnesic-Time-Traveler...

So now we know that it was Desmond's conscious self that traveled back in time during Season 3. His future visions can be attributed to this as well. The big question now is, "Where is Desmond's mind?" With his conscious being thrown back between 1996 and 2004, which Desmond do we have at the end of this episode? Is he still "Desmond 96" or "Desmond XP"? (I would categorize Desmond's flash-forward self as "Desmond Vista".) Did Desmond still not know who Sayid is at the end of this episode? Or is he back to his good old self (wait -- for the sake of avoiding confusion, let's say "current self.")? As far as his health goes, is he out of the woods? Whatever the answer is, this episode added another excellent dynamic to Desmond's journey back home to Penny.

Penny & Desmond: One Hell of a Love Story

With all of the science, mythology, and mystery surrounding Desmond's journey, his story still manages to have a great and emotional love story at its core. In fact, Desmond's longing to get back to his true love Penny is what roots his story in the real world for us. Without it, all of the time traveling, science and mystery wouldn't matter. But because we care and want to see Desmond and Penny reunited, his farfetched, mind-blowing story works.

Penny is Desmond's constant; this ties in quite nicely to the themes of fate and destiny throughout the show. Will Penny be the rescuer of Desmond and our Losties? Did she really not know about the freighter, even with claims by Minkowski that she has tried to communicate with the boat?

    Daniel Faraday aka Geddy Lee

Even if Daniel's circa '96 hair resembled a well-known Canadian rocker's, he is one hell of an interesting character. Are his radiation experiments the cause of his seeming brain/memory degeneration? Was his encounter with Desmond in the past the reason he was crying at the beginning of "Confirmed Dead"? Is his note from the end of the episode reading, "If something goes wrong, Desmond Hume is my constant," a clue stating that his own conscious will travel time soon? I, for one, am glad that he has been paired with Desmond's story and hope that together they can help each other complete their journeys.

    The Sickness

Are the symptoms that Desmond and the now deceased Minkowski had the same as the infamous sickness that wreaked havoc on Danielle's crew and is oft mentioned by Dharma and other folk? Did Danielle manage to survive by having her own constant? Alex, maybe?

    Black Rock Auction

The auction of the journal from the Black Rock was a nice touch that added to the mythology of the land locked dynamite emporium and to island itself. The item belonged to the Hanso family; Alvar Hanso is the major investor and namesake of the Hanso Foundation. The Hanso Foundation, for anyone who needs a refresher, is the creator of the Dharma Initiative. The Dharma Initiative are the makers of those oh-so-lovely hatches, vans, security fences, wine, peanut butter, fish biscuits, and testers of the mysterious island we all love. Why was Widmore bidding on the journal? Products with his name have shown up on the island - anyone remember Sun's pregnancy test? Widmore has long been theorized as one of the ones "pulling the strings." Was this proof?

    Easter Eggs and Quick Facts

    • Daniel's machine setting was 2.342, and the Black Rock journal was lot number 2342. They both contain the last two digits of Hurley's fabled "The Numbers".
    • Desmond asked Penny to wait 8 years for his Christmas Eve call. 8 is also one of "The Numbers".
    • Penny's Address? 423 Cheyne Walk. 4 and 23? You guessed it - Two of the numbers.
    • It's December 24th 2004. This puts the amount of time that our survivors have been on the island at 94 days.
    • With this time table, how does that play into time both on and off the island?

In last night's episode, we got pound-for-pound the most information packed into an episode this season. It will definitely warrant many repeat viewings to delve deeper into the information provided in this story. This episode had a great balance of mystery, action, sci-fi, and romance, which made it a wonderment and thrill to watch. We are only through episode 5 and I'm already white knuckled and firmly placed at the edge of my seat.

    The Pneumatic Subway

    "

    pneumatic_carriage

The first subway in America was not a train, but a pneumatic people mover! Opening for business in 1870, the subway worked on the same principle as the pneumatic tubes we use at a drive-through bank. Giant fans at either end provided pressure to blow a carriage through Manhattan.

For a fare of two bits per passenger– all of which was donated to a charity for soldiers’ orphans– twenty guests at a time could take a ride on the pneumatic carriage. The custom-built, fifty-ton blower was situated in an adjacent chamber, separated from the waiting area by a long corridor. The Æolor blower was twenty-one feet high, sixteen feet long, and thirteen feet wide, and it contained two colossal lengthwise paddles which rotated to draw air in one side and out the other. The magnificent blower was outfitted with a special set of adjustable baffles which allowed her to switch from suck to blow without reversing rotation. By tapping a telegraph wire, the conductor signaled the boiler engineer to engage the 100 horsepower steam engine. Atmospheric pressure increased by “a few grains per inch,” pressing the carriage into the tunnel as the air rushed to escape through the vent at the far end.

Financial problems led to the closing of the carrier in the 1870s. The tunnel was sealed until 1912, when it was reopened for the installation of an electric subway line. Link

And Warhol Using an Amiga to Paint Debbie Harry

“In what many have dubbed the world’s first multi-media presentation on July 23rd 1985 at the Lincoln Center in New York, the maverick art legend Andy Warhol stood on stage using a new computer to paint a portrait of pop star Debbie Harry in his own unique style. That night the world was introduced to something entirely new in computing: the Amiga.”

This past Wednesday’s Rocketboom episode on Andy Warhol sent me on a half hour hunt for other lost material by the artist. Who knew that the best link to be found (besides the video of him eating a hamburger) would be info on a rare piece of Warhol using an Amiga? 2008-02-29-BarackKareem180.jpg

I've been all over cyberspace as one of the participants in will.i.am's music video supporting Barack Obama. I'm very pleased to be one of those who feel that he has what it takes to be president. I first met Senator Obama in the summer of '06 at the Senate building in DC. I was immediately taken with his intelligence and ability to connect with people.

Since that time, his political vision has impressed me as being able to reunite our country along the fault lines caused by the policies of the current administration. Someone who can lead all of us would be the the ideal candidate and I feel that Barack is that someone. I am looking forward to having the chance to vote for a candidate with his gifts.

I've been amused to see how Mr. Obama's critics have tried to pull him down by criticizing his "lack of foreign relations experience." I'm not aware that either Hillary Clinton or John McCain have any huge advantage in the awareness necessary to deal with the foreign relations aspect of the presidency. Only people with a Cabinet or State Department background can immediately state their readiness in that area. Mr. Obama has the intelligence and leadership qualities that will serve him well should he win the nomination and election.

Advisors play a central role in foreign policy areas and all of our presidents have relied on the help of those advisors to form their foreign policy agenda. As President, Mr. Obama will do the same. I'm sure his ability as an inspirational leader will help to attract the best advice.

The Jawbone: It has a humanistic technology. It feels your skin, and knows when you're talking and it gets rid of the environmental noise. We wanted to take out the techie and nerdy stuff and make it as beautiful as possible. If it isn't beautiful it doesn't belong on your face. We bring values and these values create a soul for the company we work with.

The XO laptop: (the $100 One Laptop Per Child). Nicholas Negroponte told Behar the design is why kids will want the laptop. He designed it to be iconic, too look like it was for a kid, but not a toy.

A couple of weeks ago I was in Palo Alto at a seminar, and I shot a short video clip of three people, who are a lot smarter than I am, struggling to open an XO laptop: Link

One Step Forward for Internet Censorship, A Step Backwards for Israel

    "

Usually, I don't write about or get into political views on my blog, but this issue concerns me as a blogger and as citizen in a country such as Israel.

To make a long story short: More than a year and a half ago, Parliament member, Amnon Cohen suggested that all internet service providers should filter internet content for anyone who does not identify themselves as adults. The process was meant to be done via biometric identification and at the server level.

Now the proposal is due in Parliament after it received support from the government and passed the preliminary vote (out of three). According to this proposal, all internet users will either have to install filter software or use service-side filtering unless they identify themselves as adults willing to consume adult content (this is the place where the Minister of Telecommunications may decide how to identify users).

If this proposal is approved and gets full support from the government at the end of process of three votes, these will be the consequences as the result of this matter:
    • Blogs, Forums and other group discussions could be blocked by default;
    • Censorship is to be activated on News sites (pictures, videos, etc.,) and they will lose their freedom of expression;
    • LGBT communities will be probably blocked as well;
    • Israeli companies that contain user-generated content are at a major risk because surely this kind of content will be hard to monitor.
Speaking of which, what will become of the Israeli Internet industry?

If you familiar with the web 2.0, you must know then that there is an enormous growth when it's come to Israel's Internet Industry, a step like this will hurt lots of companies.

Frankly, I can't believe that in an advanced country like Israel, the government itself would have a hand in bringing down its own economy. Moreover, I can't even imagine a situation where content from my blog or worse, my whole blog is being censored. It's sounds nightmarish and like the plot of a doomsday sci fi story.

However, this is just one side of a bigger issue which seems to be more and more a matter of political power and control over Israeli civilians. In a democratic country, an undemocratic law that gains support by the government, may open the doors for other unreasonable similar low blows that could endanger more of our freedoms on the future.

What's scares me is that most of the population naively sees this action as something that will protect their children from being exposed to inappropriate content and do not fear its ramifications on all of us as a whole. If a parent wants to, and they should protect their kids, it's his/her personal decision to place a filter that will block access to adult content on their computer. It's their choice as an individual and that simple.

Please take a minute to read the full story on this blog and feel free to spread the word because your help is needed! Don't allow our rights to slowly slip away. Let's move toward progress!

You can also show your support in the Coalition against Internet Censorship group (via Facebook).
