Slipping into Side Issues

Read Hebrews 7:8-10

   "8 Priests receive a tenth of everything, but they die. Melchizedek received a tenth of everything, but we are told that he lives."

Observe

   The author did not say that Melchizedek lives, but rather that some unnamed source has declared that he is living. The author accepts this testimony in order to support his point that a priest after the order of Melchizedek is greater than a priest after the order of Levi.

   Given how sloppy the author has been with details up to this point, I can not in good conscience insist that Melchizedek is still alive.

   And I believe it is a side issue. Even the question of whether or not Melchizedek is Jesus is a side issue. The point is that Jesus is a far superior high priest compared to Aaron or any of his descendants.
