Read Hebrews 1:10-12
"10 God also said, 'Lord, in the beginning you laid the foundation of the earth. With your own hands you made the heavens.' "
Observe
Why would God call anyone 'Lord'? Because that is their title. To whom would God say 'You laid the foundation of the earth.'? John confirmd that Jesus is Lord and laid the foundation of the earth. The author of Hebrews is confirming this with a strange nechanism. He takes the words David said to God, and has God saying them to Jesus. He is taking a verse from the Old Testament out of context to proclaim a different truth.
Did the author of Hebrews rightly divide the old truth? No, he used it to present a new truth without contradicting the old truth.
The problem with taking a verse out of context to make a point comes when the original truth gets hidden or contradicted by that point.
Here we have a shift from David telling God to God telling Jesus, but the old truth gets expanded, not hidden or contradicted.
Do
Ask Jesus to help you to be careful about criticizing someone about taking a verse out of context.
