Mutallab is Chancellor of BSU

Benue State University BSU’s Visitor and Executive Governor of Benue
State Rt. Hon. Gabriel Suswam in 2009 appointed as BSU’s Chancellor,
Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Abdul Mutallab an Icon of the Financial Industry.
Alhaji Mutallab was formally installed BSU’s Chancellor at its
6th-10th Combined Convocation Ceremonies on April 23, 2010.
Alhaji Mutallab Chartered Accountant and Chartered Banker Emiritus,
born December 15, 1939 at Funtua, Katsina State, is a personality of
international dimensions. An alumnus of the famous Barewa College
Zaria, of Achimola College of Business Adminisration Accra Ghana, and
of South-West London College London, Alh. Mutallab became a Chartered
and Certified Accountant since 1965, and has been member of various
professional chartered accounting and banking bodies in Nigeria and
overseas.
Alh. Mutallab obtained his WASC in 1959, became a Graduate of the
Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants in 1965, was
admitted Associate of the Chartered and Certified Accountants (ACCA)
in 1968, admitted Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants
of Nigeria (ICAN) in 1969, admitted Fellow of the Association of
Chartered and Certified Accountants (FCCA) in 1978, and was admitted
Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) in
1979.
He attended World-rated Professional Conferences/ Courses including:
International Banking Course in New York City under the auspices of he
American Bankers Association (1978), Senior Management Course,
organized by the Manchester Business School in 1980, and the 12th
World Banking Conference, organized by the Financial Times of London.
Alh. Mutallab was bestowed the Nigerian honour of the Commander of
the Order of the Niger CON in 1979, became a Fellow of the Institute
of the International Bankers Association of the United States FIIBA in
1982, was bestowed with the Italian National Honour of Commander of
the Order of Merit in 1982, became a Fellow of the Institute of
Bankers FIB in 1983, and was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate
Degree by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1990.
The BSU Chancellor had served humanity in various capacities. He was
Managing Accountant with Fuller Jenka Beecroft & Co. Chartered
Accountants of Moorgate, London E.C.2 (1965-68), Chief Accountant and
acting many times as the General Manager of Defence Industries
Corporation of Nigeria, Kaduna, (1968-71), Financial Controller of New
Nigeria Development Co. Ltd (NNDC) Kaduna (1971-73), Deputy General
Manager of NNDC Kaduna (1973-74), and General Manager, NNDC Kaduna
(1974-75).
He was appointed Federal Minister of Economic Development and
Reconstruction and Member of the Federal Executive Council and later
Minister of Cooperatives and Supply (1975-78), and voluntarily
resigned as Minister in July, 1978.
Mutallab was appointed Executive Vice-Chairman of United Bank for
Africa Ltd UBA 1978-79 and Managing Director of the bank form 1980 to
1988 when he voluntarily retired his services from the bank and went
into Consultancy, Board Directorship and other part-time appointments.
Hence, Alh. Mutallab has been Chairman of the following boards: Arewa
Textiles Limited, National Electric Power Authority, Nigerian Bank for
Commerce ands Industry, New Africa Merchant Bank,, and TCPC
Sub-Committee on the Commercialization of Nigeria Security Printing
and Minting Company Ltd.
He also served as Vice Chairman of Nigeria Merchant Bank Ltd,
Commissioner of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Director of
Nigeria Agip Oil Co. Ltd, Director of Cement Company of Northern
Nigeria, Council Member of University of Ibadan, Member of the Okigbo
Panel on the Central Bank of Nigeria, Member of the National Revenue
Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, and Alternate Director
of Bank of the North Ltd. Currently, Alh. Mutallab is Chairman of
seven corporate organizations, namely: First Bank of Nigeria Plc,
Impresit Bakolori Plc, Incar Nigeria Plc, Spring Waters Nigeria Ltd
SWAN, Deanshanger Project Ltd, Helios Towers Nigeria Ltd, and Sea
Trucks Group Ltd. He is also Director of three corporate outfits:
Grief Plc, PGN Ltd, and Phoenix Oil Ltd.
In spite of his very busy schedule, Alh. Mutallab still finds time to
offer community service as Trustee of the Katsina State foundation
named, Gidauniyar Jihar Katsina, Honorary Member , International
Investor Council – appointed by the President of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria, and Member, Sailndo, a charity organization with national
and international reach.
