सान्द्रं तमिस्नावृतमार्तमन्धं ददर्श तद्भारतमार्यखण्डम्।
गूढा रजन्यामरिभिर्विनष्टा माता भृशं क्रन्दति भारतानाम्॥
Anvaya
[अहं] तत् सान्द्रम्, तमिस्नावृतम्, आर्तम्, अन्धम् आर्यखण्डं भारतं ददर्श। अरिभिः विनष्टा, रजन्यां गूढा भारतानां माता भृशं क्रन्दति।
Meaning
तत् - tat - that; सान्द्रम् - sāndram - thickly; तमिस्नावृतम् - tamisnāvṛtam - cloaked in darkness; आर्तम् - ārtam - suffering; अन्धम् - andham - blind; आर्यखण्डं - āryakhaṇḍaṁ - the Aryan country; भारतं - bhārataṁ - India; ददर्श - dadarśa - I saw; अरिभिः - aribhiḥ - by (her) enemies; विनष्टा - vinaṣṭā - corrupted; रजन्यां - rajanyāṁ - at night; गूढा - gūḍhā - hidden; भारतानां - bhāratānāṁ - of the Bharatas; माता - mātā - the mother; भृशं - bhṛśaṁ - aloud; क्रन्दति - krandati - wept;
Sanskrit
तदा घनान्धकारेण अवगुण्ठितम्, पीडितम्, अन्धं तत् प्रसिद्धम् आर्यखण्डं भारतम् अहम् अपश्यम्। शत्रुभिः धर्षिता भारतानां माता रात्रौ प्रच्छन्ना भृशं क्रन्दति स्म।
English Interpretation
I saw then this land of India, the Aryan country, wrapped thickly in darkness, suffering, blinded; hidden in the night, ruined by her enemies, the mother of the Bharatas wept aloud.

देखा मैंने-
घोर तिमिर में घिरा हुआ था अंधकारमय भारत,
आर्यभूमि पर अंधकार की चादर सी फैली थी,
रिपुओं के आघातों से क्षत-विक्षत भारत जननी को
घनी रात में फूट-फूट कर रोते देखा॥
