Godly emotion

by Pastor Simon Measures

Bible verse:

His servants said to (David), "What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food." And he said, "Now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."

2 Samuel 12:21,23 - NKJV

Reflection:

The passage above comes at the end of a very tragic, emotional episode in David's life. During it David lost a son to illness. It was a desperate time. It was an emotional time. Emotion is a response of your soul to events surrounding you. Indeed, God made humans as emotional beings.

King David understood emotion. He understood its role in his life. He valued it and exercised it. Nevertheless, at the same time, he also knew when to take charge of it and move away from it. If you suppress emotion you can be bottling up a response that needs expression for the sake of your well-being. On the other hand, if you don't give your spirit charge over your emotions you can find yourself stuck in a dry place. There comes a time to move on emotionally from certain moments in your life. There are fresh green pastures and waters of rest for you to move to with your Good Shepherd Jesus. You have to put distance between yourself and emotionally charged moments. To do this you first have to deposit all worry, distress, bitterness and hurt with the Lord. Psa.23.

Be emotional to God's glory! Nevertheless, at the same time watch over yourself. Do not, for example, allow emotion to determine how you see things. Indeed, do not view your experiences and your situation through the eyes of emotion. Keep emotion under your spirit's charge and, like David, allow God's Word and God's Spirit to enlighten your eyes.

Use emotion to the glory of God!
