'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.'
Micah 5:2 - NKJV
Reflection:
I'm always amused when I see the wise men in the nativity scene. I understand why they're so often put there. And they certainly represent an important part of the story of Jesus born to Mary in the town of Bethlehem. Scripture reveals though that it was not a stable they entered to see the mother and child but a house. By the time the wise men reached Bethlehem, it seems Jesus' family had settled there and established a home. Mat.2:11.
The wise men arrived to celebrate the Messiah's birth. Maybe they arrived on His birthday. Perhaps His first or second birthday. Who knows but, on they're way there, they'd discovered that the prophet Micah had foretold that the Christ, the Messiah, would be born in Bethlehem. They'd assumed that the king of the Jews would be born in Jerusalem but scripture put them straight on this and they continued their journey onwards to Bethlehem. As they neared that little town they saw that the star they'd been following was there over the Bethlehem announcing the scripture's fulfilment. The prophet Micah's words had come to pass! Mat.2:9.
Now what they did when the saw that star in its proclaiming location is important to take note of. The reason for this is that it sets a precedent for us! The gospel of Matthew tells us, "When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy." We likewise are to rejoice with "exceedingly great joy" as we come to see the bright and morning star not only come to the Earth but also now rising in our hearts. That star is Jesus our Lord. He is the Christ who has come to save us! Mat.2:10.
This Christmas rejoice with exceedingly great joy!
