For you were hypocrites in your hearts when you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, "Pray for us to the Lord our God, and according to all that the Lord your God says, so declare to us and we will do it."
Jeremiah 42:20 - NKJV
Reflection:
The people requested prayer from the prophet but their declaration of intent was entirely empty. Their outward expression said one thing but their inner condition said another. They had fine words to say but their hearts were not in accord with them. The prophet Jeremiah saw through this and said of them, "You were hypocrites in your hearts." You don't have to be a prophet to spot a disparity between what is expressed and what gets done. The condition of a man belies his words and the people around him spot it. They soon discount his words.
Let's make sure the words we say on behalf of the Gospel aren't discounted! We want to share the Gospel with others but it takes more than words. It requires also a consistency between our words and how we are in life. Our deeds and our inner condition determine how we are in life and how we are seen in life. For example, it's no good us preaching peace if we don't also exhibit peace. If you want people to hear your words about peace you have to see to it that people also acknowledge that that peace as in you. You want to tell your worried neighbours that peace is available in Jesus assuring them it will keep their hearts and minds in troubled times. They will listen if they see that peace in you. Otherwise, they will cover their ears and turn away.
As you preach the Gospel also walk in the Spirit! If you walk in the Spirit you will exhibit the Spirit's fruit. This gives credibility to your Gospel preaching. People need the assurance this credibility gives. It's what brought me to salvation. When I finally saw the Spirit's fruit in those preaching the Gospel then I came to Christ. I saw God's love, joy and peace in them and as a result wanted the same to be in me. I came to the Son of God so that He might grant it to me what He had granted to them. Gal.5:22-23.
