Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land.
Psalm 85:9 - NKJV
Reflection:
Some Psalms are heart cries made against a background of personal experience but then you come across others and you think, "This is full of things that are beyond what the writer could have seen or experience in his life time." Such Psalms are more in the realm of prophecy than of prayer. Psalm 85 is one such psalm.
We were reading Psalm 85 and I thought, "This is a Christmas psalm!" It has the same ring to it as Mary's song in Luke 1. It's proclaiming the salvation that is brought to God's people by the coming of the Christ. I hear the Gospel story in this Psalm. By the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ salvation has come "near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land." As the apostle John says of His birth, "And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." For you who have received Him personally, this glory of the Saviour and His salvation now dwells in your land!
Let psalm 85 be a Christmas song of joy from your heart expressing your thanksgiving that Christ has come. The Holy Spirit gave the words of this Psalm at a time when the things it told of seemed far away but now they are near us, yes, even upon us. The people of God in ancient times sang this Psalm with joy. How much more should we proclaim it with joy also now!
Righteousness shall make His footsteps our pathway!
