Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They have bowed down and fallen; But we have risen and stand upright.
Psalm 20:7 - 8 - NKJV
Reflection:
So many of the spiritual basics of Christian life - those basics that relate to trusting in God and knowing God as our Heavenly Father - are to be found expressed powerfully in Psalms. In Psalms we are so often hearing an expression of what we ought to be doing in our spiritual life walk. Sadly, many Christians aren't realising this. As a result they aren't acting in accordance with it. The "not doing" what ought to be done is causing serious problems. The two verses above taken from Psalm 20 give an example of what I'm referring to.
We have a problem in our modern societies. We have so many things we depend on. Besides that we have so many experts and professionals we have confidence in. And yet, our trust needs to be in the Lord! Our trust needs to be in the name of the Lord. That name represents all that He is, all that He has done and all that He lives to do. It's a name we can utterly depend on. If that is how it is for you, you're going to be soon saying, "We have risen and stand upright!" If that's not how it is, you're going to be finding yourself in the group of which it says, "They have bowed down and fallen." Prov.18:10.
I've found it helps me tremendously in getting my trust rightly placed to start my day confessing aloud and in prayer my trust in God. In my devotional time in the morning I will join the Psalmist in saying, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." In doing this, what I'm doing is getting the focus of my trust for that day placed firmly in the right place, that is, in the name of the Lord. It takes my eyes off people and things for unfailing help and on to the Lord who is the source of unfailing help! Prov.14:26.
