The words of your mouth

by Pastor Simon Measures

Bible verse:

Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.

James 3:4 - 5 - NKJV

Reflection:

A Christian lady stayed with us who talked daily about things that weren't going right and people who weren't doing things right. If we'd have told her what she was doing was complaining I'm sure she'd have been surprised. Some people are in such a habit of talking like that that they don't even realise what they are doing is complaining.

Sadly though it was all having negative impact on her life. Troublesome circumstances seemed to follow this lady around. She always seemed to be in some predicament or another. The Bible has something to say about this. It likens the tongue to the rudder of a ship. As the rudder gives the ship direction so does the tongue to the man. The words of this lady's mouth were directing her into, or even drawing towards her, troublesome situations. It's time we acknowledged this, our lives will go in the direction our words go!

Thank the Lord, then, as Christians we are called to praise. We are called to praise the Lord. Our mouths are to be filled with a declaration of all the good things the Lord is working out for us in our lives. We are meant to be speaking about what is going well. When we do, soon we find that more of what is going well appears in our lives! This doesn't mean we don't face up to the problems. We will address them too. But most of all, we will talk up what is going right and so, in correspondence, more of what is right will come!
