“All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:24 - 25 - NKJV
Reflection:
None of us like to face up to our own mortality. The prophetic word though doesn't shy away from giving us a heads up about it, a reminder in the form of a picture about the reality of human life. In the portion of scripture above the Apostle Peter has quoted from the prophet Isaiah to bring that picture reminder into a New Testament context. The reminder, though, isn't to discourage us, far from it it's there to encourage us! It's the encouragement of this prophetic utterance that Peter is looking to emphasis.
In the midst of this transitory life we find ourselves in, God gifts us with something that endures forever! It is the Word of God. It was preached to us and, praise the Lord, we have received it. This has been life changing. At last there is something about our lives and in our lives not fleeting, not changing, not passing away. We can look to the Word of God for something that endures. Throughout all our life - and through all time - the Word of God remains with us and for us.
Disappointment comes from seeing only that "the grass is withering and the flower falling away".The Word of God is there to reverse your disappointment. Looking to the Word of God will lift up your head causing you to see value and hope in your life. I'm not just talking about the prophetic message recorded for you in scripture here. I'm talking about the Word of God become flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour! He is in our lives and abides.
