Our Purpose
“And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.” Mark 13:10
Have you ever done something for so long that you forgot why you were doing it? In South Africa, I started running to get in shape and lose weight. After meeting friends and running in marathons, my original purpose was replaced by the joy of camaraderie and competition.
There are certain things we do just because we have always done it that way. Churches deal with that problem all the time. It might be the programs that they use, their music, the order of service, or the times services are held. We do things one way for so long we forget why we do it. In some cases there were legitimate reasons. Years ago some churches in rural farming communities had Sunday services late in the morning or even the early afternoon. Why? Farmers had to milk the cows and do the daily chores. They would carry the family to church in wagons over rough roads. In those days the service times were established to appeal to the farmer and his family. Now, decades later, we sometimes have services in time frames that do not fit our culture. Currently farmers have cars and trucks and milking machines and their sons play football.
Most churches have been started with the purpose of fulfilling the Great Commission. The desire to share the message of Good News and disciple people is the central purpose. As time goes by and programs are instituted to minister to the attending families it is easy to forget what our purpose is. The church begins to focus on fellowship and meeting the needs of the attendees. Maybe they begin to develop a heart for community service and establish ministries to homeless and needy. There are so many programs that a church can do that are good and helpful.
Don’t forget the purpose. We join together to preach the Gospel to all nations.
