1 A Trumpet, a Jar, and a Torch

Dividing the three hundred men into three companies, he placed trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside. Judges 7:16

As a boy, I learned that many different tools could be used as weapons. One day, a group of us were playing close to my great-grandfather’s house. Grampy was sitting on his front porch in his rocking chair when he heard us scream in fear. A large rattlesnake had come out of the woods and was in the middle of the road. Rattlesnakes are very poisonous. This snake did not return to the woods but became very aggressive, striking out and moving towards us. We were scared, not knowing what to do. My eighty-two year old Grampy hobbled over and went right straight at the snake with only his cane. The snake struck at him, but was deflected by the cane. Then the cane snapped the head of the snake and in seconds it was dead. Grampy was our hero!

I have wondered how Gideon came up with his plan. He split the army of three hundred into three groups. Each man carried a trumpet and a jar. Inside the jar was a torch. At the proper time they blew the trumpets and broke the jars so that the light of the torches was exposed. When the men were not blowing the trumpets, they were shouting, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon.” The shock of the noise and light and the confusion caused by God created chaos among the Midianites. Israel’s enemies turned on each other and fled. The Midianites were totally destroyed.

God uses unique tools as weapons. Just as Grampy used a cane to dispatch a poisonous snake, God used trumpets, jars, and torches to send an enormous army running in fear.

What do you have in your hand? God can use a musical instrument, a computer, a pen, or a stove. With your willingness, God can send the enemy fleeing.
