 | | | A Time to Cheer!
When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen. Luke 19:37
When the Phillies won the World Series it seemed to lift the spirits of everyone. Horns honked. Flags waved. High fives and hugs were exchanged by people that did not know each other. Smiles and laughter were shared with all. Standing among the crowd as the team was celebrated was a thrilling event. People became hoarse from cheering so loud.
Jesus had fans. We call them disciples. The twelve were members of his team, but his fans were legion. The night before, a great crowd had gathered at Lazarus' house to see the man raised from the dead—and the one who performed the miracle. The crowds were bulging because Passover was only days away. When Jesus appears at the top of the Mount of Olives and then sits on a donkey colt the crowd erupts with joy. They cheered him for all the miracles they had seen. His ministry had only been about three years, but thousands had been touched by him during that time. The fame of this miracle worker had spread outside the bounds of his nation, and Gentiles were asking for his miraculous touch on servants or children. It was the perfect day for a parade!
During the World Series parade, clothing, hats, towels, homemade signs, pieces of cardboard, or anything that might be used, was waved in celebration. For Jesus they used clothing and palm branches. We cheered, as did the crowd as Jesus rode by.
Any day and every day is a good time to cheer Jesus.
