1 Who is the Enemy?

They were in great distress. Judges 2:15

In the passage of Scripture, before this verse, we read that the Israelites were doing evil in the eyes of God; they had forsaken him and were bowing down to false gods. God had warned them that if this happened he would be angry. In his anger, God handed them over to their enemies, who plundered them. Fighting as hard as they could, they could not resist, and they were continually defeated. Why were they losing so often and so badly? “Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them.” (Judges 2:15a)

If you ever get into a fight, it is important to learn as much about your opponent as you can. Many wars have been lost and nations changed because generals underestimated their opponents. It is the same with sporting events and business—the underdog can quickly become the top dog. There are many other sayings that remind us not to focus on outward appearances, such as: ‘it is not the size of the dog or his bark, it is only his bite that matters!’

I remember Bobby. He was the smallest boy in our class. Thankfully, I knew that Bobby had always been small so his father had given him boxing lessons at a young age. I would casually watch as a much larger bully would swagger up to Bobby with the intention of causing pain. It would make me smile as I realized he had no idea who he was picking on. Every bully who picked on Bobby went home in pain. He was small, but oh, what a punch!

The Israelites were fighting against enemies they had defeated easily in the past. What had changed? Someone new had joined the enemy’s team: God. Are you in a battle? It would be wise to make sure God is with you and not against you. “They were in great distress.” They were fighting against God.

Trust me—you don’t want to feel his punch.
