 | | | Ask God for the Right Things
You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:2, 3
James gives us two reasons why we do not have what we desire. The first is that we do not ask God. There may be a number of reasons for that. It might be that we fail to ask God because we think he is not listening or doesn’t care about our needs. Some don’t ask God because they do not believe he will answer them due to the fact they have no relationship with him, or that they have failed to live a godly life. Even for Christians, at times we do not ask, thinking our request is too small and insignificant.
The second reason James gives us is that we do not receive is because we ask with wrong motives. God knows the reason behind our request. God knows if we are intending to use his blessing for our own pleasure. God enjoys blessing us, but he wants us to be good stewards and use those blessings for His glory. In the previous chapter James speaks about envy and selfish ambition. Those desires cause battles within which, if unsatisfied, often end in destructive behaviors. It is that selfishness that we all possess that causes us to ask for things that we think will satisfy our desire.
What becomes a little difficult for us Christians is that we are often unsure of how pure our motives are. How do we determine what is need and what is desire? To complicate things, God does enjoy giving us our desires, just like we enjoy giving to our children, making them happy. What makes us smile broadly is when we see our children share with others what they have been given. God delights in giving us good things, and we bring joy to his heart when we share with others.
Don’t be afraid to ask God for what you desire. Let him determine what is best.
