1 Unbelievable

But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Luke 24:11

I remember many years ago a TV game show host, while on the air, called to tell someone that they had won a large cash prize. An older gentleman answered the phone, and when he was told who the call was from and that he was the grand prize winner, he hung up. It was just too unbelievable. I called an older couple years ago and introduced myself. The lady of the house hung up on me. As she was placing the phone in its cradle, I could hear her say to her husband, “I think I just hung up on the Pastor.” When I saw them the next Sunday, her response was, “I just didn’t believe it was you until I hung up.”

I am sure that you have heard stories that just sound unbelievable. Imagine someone finding an expensive diamond embedded in the blacktop of a parking lot—isn’t that just a little unbelievable? How about someone finding a purse on a park bench that contained one million dollars cash and jewelry? Unbelievable! How about the man who found it and returned it to the rightful owner? Unbelievable!

Imagine having the person you admired, trusted, and loved murdered. What if, in your mind, you thought that the same people that killed him would also try to kill you? Those people did not make mistakes. You know he was dead. There were hundreds of witnesses. The women know where he is buried. The grave he was laid in has been placed under guard. He is dead. Now you wait to see if we are next.

There is a pounding on the door. It could be them coming to arrest us. No, it is the women all talking at once, prattling on about him not being there. They say something about the guards running away and the store being moved. Nonsense. He died on the cross. Unbelievable! “Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb.”

Maybe, just maybe, it might not be so unbelievable after all. Jesus did make a promise.
