1 Stop Giving

Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: "No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary." And so the people were restrained from bringing more, because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work. Exodus 36:6, 7

Will I ever get the opportunity to stand before a congregation and say, “Stop giving!”? I was introduced to the priest of a small parish who announced to his congregation one summer Sunday that they had donated so much money, they would not have to give for the rest of the year! My greed and need came to the surface and I wanted to say, “I know missionaries that could desperately use the money.” I wished I could get a list of his congregants and let them know there is much more to be done with both helping the poor and reaching the lost.

These verses of scripture refer to the generous donations the Israelites made for the building of the tabernacle. Moses emphasized that the gifts were to be given willingly as their hearts moved them. Everything that was needed to complete the tabernacle had been given, even more than enough.

I think you know that they did not stop giving. They did stop bringing offerings for the construction of the tabernacle, but they continued to bring their regular sacrifices to God. There are times when special projects are completed and nothing more is necessary, but the work of God is never done. As long as there are hungry, needy, and lost people, there will be a need for resources to minister to them.

There are times when giving can be exciting and fun. To see a Godly project take place and be completed can be a wonderful thrill, especially if you have played a part, even a small part.

Imagine the little Israelite girl that points to the silver hooks and says, “My earrings were used to help make those.”
