1 Hold on Tight

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. Hebrews 4:14

Do you have a good grip? Can you hold on tight to the things you cherish? Some people call it a “white knuckle ride.” That means you are holding on for dear life. It may be a roller coaster ride in a theme park or riding in a car with someone in whom you have no confidence.

I am famous for hanging on tight to things I enjoy. Once you put that candy bar in my hand, you will have to pry my fingers back to remove it. Here, the author is encouraging us to hold tight to the faith we profess in Jesus Christ. There is an enemy that would like us to loosen our grip so that he can steal our confidence. We need to recognize what is valuable and grip that tightly. Sometimes we grip too tightly the things that have little value. There are horrific stories of people caught in floods that clutch valuables or animals and allow a child to be washed away. In a moment of panic they hold tight, but to the wrong thing.

That can happen to us in a spiritual sense. We can hang on to traditions or beliefs that keep us from placing our faith in Christ. Is there anything worse than holding tight, but finding out you have grabbed the rope that wasn’t secured? That happened once to my siblings and me as kids. We made a big deal about holding tight to the rope so we could be let down from the tree house, but forgot to tie the rope to a limb. I was still holding that rope tightly when I hit the ground. We need to recognize sweaty palms don’t allow a tight grip. Fear does not help us to keep things secure; confidence does. We need to have confidence in our God that helps us to hold tightly to those things that have eternal value.

Hold tightly to the things that matter: people you love and that love you, and, most importantly, your faith in God.
