Extolling God with Passion
Praise the LORD. I will extol the LORD with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. Psalm 111:1
"Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). What you are excited about will soon be what you are telling others. And often it only takes a short amount of time to know what thrills that person. I have an employee that will often tell me about local sports teams before he says hello. Another employee starts her day by announcing, to all who will listen, what her children have done the past day.
The psalmist has a heart that is bubbling with a desire to tell others of what God has done. He desires to extol God, to praise the Lord, in the council of the upright. There are times that the upright need to be reminded of all that God has done. In this psalm the writer rehearses God's provision, protection, and power. It is easier to praise when those who surround you believe the same way.
I have been to sports events where I was cheering for the wrong team according to those seated around me. I continued to cheer, but less vociferously, as not to antagonize. When surrounded by fans, I hold back nothing. The psalmist is surrounded by fans and he extols the Lord.
When we are in worship services, it is our opportunity to extol God. We can lift our voices in praise with the desire to uplift and encourage the upright.
