 | | | Down the Street from Lazarus
After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no-one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it.' Luke 19:28-31
Did the owner of the donkey and the colt live just down the street from Lazarus? Lazarus lived in the town of Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. On the night before the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, a dinner was given to honor Jesus. As he reclined eating with Lazarus, Mary took an expensive jar of perfume and poured it on the feet of Jesus, wiping his feet with her hair. A large crowd of people gathered at the home to see Jesus, and to see Lazarus because he had been risen from the dead. Was the owner of the colt at the dinner or among the crowd that gathered there? Did he live just down the street from Lazarus?
It is clear that Jesus had explained the need he would have the next day. Jesus would send two disciples to get the donkey and her colt and would use the phrase, "The Lord needs it," and whoever was there would know it would be alright. The next morning that is exactly what took place. The two disciples came and found the donkey and its colt tied outside, right by the door. Did the owner have any idea what Jesus was about to do? Did he follow along behind at a distance to watch, or just go about his business? LIving close to Lazarus must have made him curious. What is Jesus doing? Why does he want the colt?
Just down the street from Lazarus another miracle was about to occur. Jesus would ride a colt into the city of Jerusalem, surrounded by great excitement, fulfilling the Messianic prophecies of Zechariah.
