 | | | Give Flowers Now
Remember him – before the silver cord is severed, the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, or the wheel broken at the well, and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:6 & 7
In Ecclesiastes, Solomon challenges the reader to think about what really matters. As he looks back over his life, he realizes that he has wasted much of his time. He gave himself to pleasure and found that it did not satisfy. He pursued wisdom and knowledge, but only learned sorrow. Hard work meant that he would leave behind all his accomplishments to another. Riches could not be taken beyond the grave.
In this passage, Solomon tells of the importance of speaking to those we care about before they, or we, pass away. Today we use the thought, ‘give flowers now’ rather than at the funeral. Remember the person “before the silver cord is severed.” This “silver cord” can mean the preciousness of life given to us, or it can refer to bountiful supply. Someone has been watching over us, providing for us. “Remember him before the golden bowl is broken.” Bowls are containers that hold things. Our lives are “golden” because we are made in the image of God. Some day the bowl of our life will break and what it carried will be lost. “Before the pitcher is shattered at the spring” speaks of how our vessel will no longer carry the Water of Life. The wheel will break and dust returned to the ground. What we want to do should be done now, because no one knows how much time any of us are given. When we think of giving flowers, we think about saying or doing something nice for people we love.
Solomon is asking us to “remember him,” and the him he refers to is the Creator. He is saying, “Don’t wait until it is too late.” Thank God for the silver cord of life and supply, the golden bowl of his infinite mercy, the pitcher that contains the Water of Life and the wheel of life we have been given.
If you care about what God has done for you, give him the flowers now.
