1 His Brothers

After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.  John 2:12

The first miracle Jesus did was in Cana at a marriage feast.  After turning water into wine he returns to a town on the Sea of Galilee called Capernaum.  History teaches us that this is the town in which Peter lived and one that Jesus would return to frequently.  He would speak in the synagogue here and do many miracles in this place.

Jesus is accompanied by his disciples, as we might imagine, but his followers also include his mother, Mary, and his brothers.  Jesus was the firstborn of Mary, but it appears she and Joseph had a large family.  In Matthew 13:55 we read the names of Jesus' half brothers—James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas.  In the next verse we are told that he had sisters as well.  Since he was the eldest child, he would be responsible to work and provide for the family at the carpenter shop with Joseph.

What this verse tells us is that Jesus came from a normal Jewish family with many siblings.  He, like many of us, grew up with the family dynamic of many mouths to feed and much activity in the home.  It allows us to understand that Jesus is familiar with what happens in the relationships of a family.  On one occasion his mother and brothers try to remove him from danger and question him (7:1-5); "For even his own brothers did not believe him."

When I made the choice to go to a Bible college and not a state university, my family questioned my sanity.  Do not be surprised that the validity of your family will be questioned in your home.
