Whitewash "Where is the whitewash you covered it with?" Ezekiel 13:12 I learned about whitewash as a teenager. We picked the wrong day to paint the barn. Whitewash is essentially a very inexpensive type of paint that is often used to cover large surfaces. If you put the whitewash on thick enough, it hides what is behind it. When old barns begin to show their age, and you want to spruce them up without spending a lot of money, whitewash is your answer. We got the bucket and brushes one day and went to work. The barn was looking pretty spiffy until the rains came. Unfortunately, the whitewash had not had time to dry sufficiently and the rain came and caused it to run. When it had stopped and the sun came out, the old barn looked like an “old barn” whose mascara had run. It was a pretty sad sight. The prophets of Israel had essentially done the same with their messages to the people. Instead of repairing the spiritual wall that would protect the people in time of battle, the prophets had just whitewashed it with a message of peace. God’s word says that he is about to reveal the truth. The wall they have trusted in is about to fall. The prophets whitewashed it so that it looks pretty, but God is about to send torrents of rain, wind, and hail. It will collapse the wall and they will then know the truth. The message of peace that the prophets have given there is false. God was about to reveal that the whitewash these prophets had used was just cheap makeup. My wife and I were looking at a house that was for sale. The owner had tried the whitewash method to make the house appear newer and cleaner. It didn’t work. When you looked closely, you could see what had been done and that made you realize you could not be sure what you were getting. We need to make sure that we do not try to whitewash the surface of our lives, trying to hide what is truly inside. God will expose the truth. We cannot whitewash the message of God either.
