1 Come Near

Come near to God and he will come near to you. James 4:8

One of the greatest images in scripture is the return of the prodigal son. The son has realized the error of his ways and knows now that it is better to be his father’s servant than to be on his own. Picture him as he walks the road to his father’s farm. His clothes, once the latest fashion, are now soiled and tattered. I believe his head would hang in shame and embarrassment. He couldn’t be sure his father would even receive him after what he had done. He is lonely and a broken man. But the story that Jesus tells us is of a father who looks down the road in hope, longing for a glimpse of the son he misses. Then it happens. The father sees his son in the distance and runs to embrace him. We can all imagine what that would be like. Picture the two of them running towards each other: tears of joy streaming down the cheeks of the father as his son has returned home, and the same tears of joy on the son’s face as he realizes he is loved and forgiven.

Many movies have tried to recreate this ‘coming near’ between a man and woman or an adult and child. Often those first few steps, as one approaches the other, are slow and faltering until both realize that each has the same longing for an embrace. It often makes a very emotional impact. Do you realize that the God of all creation desires to embrace you in his arms? He wants to hold you tight and whisper in your ear that he has everything under control and that you are safe with him. Sometimes our theology makes God seem unapproachable. His holiness and purity seem to strengthen the wall that our sinfulness has built. We need to be reminded that the wall has been torn down for us by Jesus’ sacrifice on Calvary.

"Come near to God and he will come near to you." Many have said that God is the ultimate gentleman, never pushing himself on anyone. For each step we take towards God, he crosses many more to come closer to us.
