Responding to the Challenge
Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days. John 2:19
Jesus was often put on the spot by those who challenged him. In most cases, he ignored their pleas for more signs or miracles to prove his authority. This was one of the occasions where he took up their challenge and fired back a response. He said, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days."
I have no idea how it happened, but in high school I ended up on the debating team. One of the first things we were taught was 'definition of terms.' What does a word mean? Is there more than one possibility? Am I answering the question that was asked? Some students were able to articulate great arguments for their side, but all too often were not answering the question asked! It does not do you much good if you have a great thought at the wrong time.
The response of Jesus was right on cue. These men were challenging his authority to cast them out from a place the religious authority allows them to use. What they were doing was morally wrong, but it had not been challenged till now. Jesus tells them to 'destroy this temple and I will raise it again in three days!' They are so upset with his actions that immediately they think he means the temple they are desecrating with their presence. In fact, Jesus is making a prophetic statement about his death and resurrection. He is presenting them with the miraculous sign they asked him to give.
In the midst of turmoil and emotion, Jesus remains calm and focused. He knows what he is doing and what his purpose is. He responded to the challenge by telling them the future.
